Argyll, Scotland – October 15, 2010 – Machrihanish Dunes, the world’s most natural golf course, is proud to announce its debut on Golf World’s 2010 -2011 “Top 100 Best Golf Courses of UK and Ireland.” Since opening in 2009, Machrihanish Dunes has graced the pages of golf’s top publications and “Best of” categories, including Golfweek’s Best of Great Britain and Ireland; it was also recently named Best New Course Internationally by Links Magazine. Machrihanish Dunes is the first course ever built entirely on SSSI environmentally sensitive land, where severe restrictions on construction and maintenance were put in place by Scottish Natural Heritage.
The Golf World Top 100 UK and Ireland list of the Best Golf Courses is calculated by votes from raters throughout Europe. Golf World first published its bi-annual list in 1982; the list has since become one of the most definitive and respected UK & Ireland course listings in the industry. The list defines the best courses, both public and private, and includes a wide spectrum of styles: links courses, parkland gems and heathland courses, along with some of history’s most talented golf course designers including: Old Tom Morris, James Braid, Harry Colt, Willie Park, Jr., Herbert Fowler, Tom Simpson, Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Eddie Hackett and Pat Ruddy.
“Machrihanish Dunes was thrilled to have learned about its debut on Golf World’s Best of UK and Ireland,” said David Southworth, President & CEO of Southworth Development, owners of Machrihanish Dunes. “It’s very rewarding to be placed on a list with such great golf courses and designers with such storied pasts. For us, it’s a tremendous achievement and true testimony to sustainable golf design. The course is still a young course and we are far from finished with the enhancements that future players will enjoy, so to have been selected for this honor now is something that our designer, David McLay Kidd, and our green keeping staff should be very proud of.”
“For the entire team at that worked tirelessly to create Machrihanish Dunes to take all the credit would be folly, we got to work on the most perfect ground for golf,” said David McLay Kidd. “As Old Tom himself said a hundred years before us: ‘God had golf in his mind when he created this place’ and I would not argue with Old Tom Morris. It was a personal dream to get such an opportunity at a place that four generations of my family have enjoyed”
About Machrihanish Dunes
Machrihanish Dunes is located on 259 acres of pristine links land on Scotland’s magnificent Argyll coastline, close to the village of Machrihanish. The creation of Scottish golf course architect David McLay Kidd, Machrihanish Dunes is the first course ever to have been built on a site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Working hand-in-hand with Scottish National Heritage, Kidd and the course’s developers carefully created Machrihanish Dunes in a way that would have the least possible impact on the beautiful natural environment. Machrihanish Dunes was built without machinery and in a way that hearkens back to the way courses were designed at the turn of the 20th Century, when Old Tom Morris was at work next door at Machrihanish Golf Club designing the famed links course there.
The Ugadale Cottages, the official accommodations of the Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club, are situated in the heart of Machrihanish and only moments away from Campbeltown on the Mull of Kintyre. Directly across from the first tee of the world-renowned Machrihanish Golf Club, the Ugadale Cottages offer world-class accommodations as well as world-class golf.
The Ugadale Cottages offer guests a taste of new luxury: something that was heretofore scarce in this part of Scotland. Each cottage has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a comfortable living space with flat-screen television and working fireplace. The seven cottages are luxuriously appointed with all the amenities one would expect to find in the world’s finest hotels, but with a Scottish flavour and the kind of warm hospitality this part of the world is known for. Add to all this the quaint Old Clubhouse Pub, with its fine fare and welcoming atmosphere, and the Village’s breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, and you have a destination that’s unrivalled in the world of links golf.
