ORLANDO, Fla., (Oct. 26, 2010) – Golfweek – the publication preferred by serious golfers – will release its annual Golfweek’s Best New Courses list as part of its upcoming Oct. 29 issue. As one of the most popular lists of the magazine’s extensive collection of Golfweek’s Best rankings, the 2010 New Courses list features the nation’s top 40 new layouts that are fast-becoming golf’s hottest must-play courses.
The top three tracks on the Golfweek’s Best New Courses list all hail from the northwestern United States: Old Macdonald at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Bandon, Ore.) takes the top spot, while the 18-hole tracks at Huntsman Springs (Driggs, Idaho) and Shooting Star (Teton Village, Wyo.) rank No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
“While the pace of course openings has slowed of late, our list shows that the look and feel of new courses are more interesting and less formulaic than ever,” said Bradley S. Klein, national director of Golfweek’s Best Courses ratings program. “Our raters recognize quality, whether it’s a wide open coastal links like Old Macdonald (No. 1) or part of an ambitious downtown redevelopment plan like The Golf Club at Harbor Shores (No. 31) in Benton Harbor, Mich.”
To produce Golfweek’s Best Courses lists, a nationwide team of course raters – which currently boasts more than 600 evaluators – surveys more than 2,200 courses on the basis of 10 criteria, including routing, conditioning, variety and memorability of holes. The result is an average of scores that then dictates a course’s overall ranking.
“Golfweek’s Best New Courses list consistently puts a host of burgeoning courses on the map, often before the industry has even begun to take note,” said Jason Redditt, publisher of Golfweek. “And it is this expert approach to course rankings that keeps serious golfers looking to Golfweek for direction on the greatest places to play.”
