Sold-out tournament at TPC Sawgrass benefits LPGA-USGA Girls Golf
Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., November 4, 2010 – LPGA Tour winners Laura Diaz and Julieta Granada will appear at the 8th annual EWGA Foundation Charity Tournament to benefit LPGA-USGA Girls Golf. The sold-out event will be played at the site of THE PLAYERS Championship, the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida on Monday, November 15. Other activities include a cocktail reception and dinner at the World Golf Hall of Fame Museum in nearby St Augustine on the Sunday evening before the tournament, a silent auction and awards luncheon following the 8:30 am shot gun start.
To support this fundraiser for the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program, tax-deductable contributions can be made to the EWGA Foundation at www.ewgafoundation.com
“We are very excited to have Laura and Julieta at this year’s annual charity tournament for Girls Golf,” says Margaret Downey, president of the EWGA Foundation. “What a thrill for our golfers to be greeted by these two outstanding LPGA players. Julieta will be ‘selling’ drives on a par 5 hole and Laura will be at the famous No. 17, with its daunting island green. They are sure to save each team a stroke or two and provide a big boost to our fundraising efforts.”
Diaz, a four-time Solheim Cup participant, has two career LPGA Tour victories and more than $4 million in winnings. In 2007, she served as the honorary chair of the EWGA Member-Get-A-Member program and played a round of golf with the Recruiter of the Year during the EWGA Conference at Amelia Island Plantation.
The first Paraguayan-born player to win on the LPGA Tour, Granada holds the tour record for most money earned by a rookie when she became a Rolex First-Time Winner capturing the $1 million first place prize at the 2006 ADT Championship. Her career earnings are now over $2.2 million.
Proceeds raised from this EWGA Foundation event will support LPGA-USGA Girls Golf (Girls Golf). Over the past seven years, the EWGA Foundation, through EWGA chapters and association-wide fundraising efforts, has donated over $400,000 to LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, making the EWGA one of the largest single contributors to the Girls Golf program aside from the USGA. Many EWGA members also serve as mentors, volunteers and site directors at Girls Golf sites around the country.
LPGA-USGA Girls Golf was formed to connect girls, ages 7 to 17, to the game of golf. A developmental junior golf program and the only national initiative of its kind, Girls Golf presents an opportunity for girls to make lasting friendships, gain self-confidence, learn to compete and have fun, while fostering a lifetime of enjoyment for the game.
Girls Golf, with nearly 200 sites around the country and more than 65,000 participants since its inception in 1989, is administered through a partnership between The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Foundation and the United States Golf Association (USGA), both 501(c)(3) charitable organizations.
The EWGA Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt organization formed and supported by the Executive Women’s Golf Association. Its mission is to create and fund education and leadership programs for women of all ages. Other initiatives include the development of a golf education curriculum, the ‘Women On Par®’ scholarship program, and Drive for Dreams outreach program to ‘give the gift of golf’.
Since it was founded in 1991 as the Executive Women’s Golf Association, the EWGA has enriched the lives of over 100,000 women connecting them to learn, play, and enjoy golf for business and for fun. EWGA chapters provide a wide range of golf, social and networking activities for both new and experienced golfers. A welcoming environment, golf education and player development, and organized play programs are part of the many benefits of EWGA membership.
The EWGA is headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. There are currently over 125 chapters throughout the United States with international chapters in Canada. For more information about the EWGA and its membership, visit www.ewga.com.
