Beeville, Texas – (Nov. 15, 2010) -Teach Loud, Learn Proud-that’s the credo of innovative Moreno Middle School math teacher John Johnson of Beeville, Texas. A golf aficionado, Johnson is using golf techniques in the classroom to engage his sixth grade students in learning and get them excited about math.
Inspired by the electric patterns of LoudMouth Golf clothing, Johnson also dresses the part on his ‘Learn Loud Days’ when he is outfitted head-to-toe in LoudMouth Golf apparel.
The entire school, including Principal Jean Blankenship, has supported Johnson and his ‘Teach Loud, Learn Proud’ slogan and innovative teaching techniques.
Most of the students know little about golf, so Johnson’s teaching gives them an opportunity to learn about a new sport and delve into math simultaneously.
Under Johnson’s golf-inspired tutelage, students can become members of the Mad Minute Birdie Club (by scoring in the top percentage on their weekly multiplication review) or even join the Hole in One Club, if enough of their math answers are accurate. If students get A’s on all their subjects, not just math, they can also join the Eagle Club.
“Having these clubs motivates the students to try to get to different levels and receive different prizes for reaching each level,” Johnson said. “It is just something different and they are picking up on it and they are having fun with it.” Johnson’s classes also play Golf Jeopardy on Fridays using mathematics for the categories.
Johnson’s innovative techniques include posting a giant golf scorecard to help maintain discipline and keep students from talking out of turn and disrupting the class. The scorecard is maintained by the students to encourage peer discipline and helps them track each other’s behavior in class. Good behavior is awarded by being admitted to the Birdie Club.
“It’s just a motivational tool because I want them to be in class and I want them to want to excel,” said Johnson.
Johnson, who first became a fan of LoudMouth clothing after seeing John Daly in the colorful patterns, reached out to LoudMouth’s CEO, Larry Jackson, to see if the company would be willing to sponsor a teacher.
