November 16, 2010 – Tokyo, Japan
Yonex Tour Professional and teenage superstar Ryo Ishikawa, shot a final round 5-under 67 to capture his ninth career Japan Golf Tour victory at the Mitsui Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters in Gotemba Japan.
Entering the final round tied for the lead with Hiroyuki Fujita, Ishikawa carded seven birdies and two bogeys to finish at 14-under par for the tournament, two shots ahead of runner-up Brendan Jones.
“I played really well on a course I like so I am overjoyed,” said Ishikawa. “I have been able to win while making what I feel are good adjustments to my swing.”
En route to his third win of the season, Ryo shot rounds of 70 (-2), 72 (even), 65 (-7), and 67 (-5) for a total score of 274.
With the Yonex NanoV Nextage Type 430 driver, Yonex NanoV Nextage Tour Forged irons and NanoV Nextage Type ST fairway wood as his weapons of choice, Ryo’s victory moved him to second place on the Japan Golf Tour’s Money List with just three events remaining. This victory also moved Ishikawa’s World Ranking up seven spots from 45th to 38th.
“If I play like I did today then I think I have a chance to win in the remaining three events,” Ishikawa added
Ryo made history this year when he shot a record final round 12-under par 58 in the Japan Golf Tour’s The Crowns at Nogoya Golf Club. Ishikawa’s 58 is the lowest score ever on a major golf tour, surpassing the JGTO’s previous best score of 59 set by Masahiro Kuramoto in 2003. Ishikawa received a certificate from Guinness World Records Ltd. acknowledging his 12-under 58 from the final round of The Crowns as the lowest 18-hole score ever on a sanctioned tour. This is Ishikawa’s second Guinness World Record; he previously made history in 2007 by becoming the youngest player ever to win a professional tournament when he won the Japan Golf Tour’s Munsingwear Open KSB Cup at 15 (using Yonex irons).
