BRADENTON, Fla. – The Concession Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course designed in association with Tony Jacklin, was built around the spirit and tradition of the Ryder Cup. Its name commemorates what has been deemed as one of the greatest acts of sportsmanship when Nicklaus conceded the final putt to Jacklin in the 1969 Ryder Cup, rendering the teams in a 17-17 tie, the first in Ryder Cup history. The U.S. retained the cup, and the gesture marked the beginning of a lasting friendship between the two men.
In keeping with that same spirit of competition and camaraderie associated with the Ryder Cup, The Concession Golf Club has hosted several interclub tournaments this year against teams from the U.S. and Great Britain, in which the teams played a modified Ryder Cup format competing in alternate shot, better ball and match play. The first match was against the Medinah Country Club from Illinois, site of the 2012 Ryder Cup and host to several PGA Tour major championships over the years, including the U.S. Open and PGA Championship.
The second tournament was against Stoke Park Country Club and Resort from Buckinghamshire, Great Britain. Stoke Park is one of London’s premier clubs and has been featured in two James Bond movies, “Goldfinger” and “Tomorrow Never Dies,” as well as the hit film “Bridget Jones’s Diary.” Stoke Park is also home to the Jonathan Yarwood Golf Academy in the United Kingdom. Yarwood, a former instructor at the Leadbetter Academy for nine years, has on multiple occasions been named one of Golf Digest’s Top 20 Teachers Under 40 Years Old. Yarwood’s U.S. academy is a state-of-the-art teaching facility located at The Concession.
In the third match, The Concession hosted the Lindrick Golf Club from Nottinghamshire, England, site of the 1957 Ryder Cup, which just so happens to share the name “Lindrick” with the main street inside The Concession. During their stay, the Lindrick team presented The Concession with a beautiful autographed print personalized for The Concession from Lee Westwood, the number one golfer in the world, who grew up in Lindrick and is still an active member at their club.
“What an exciting opportunity it was to be able to play a country club with such a rich and storied history as the Lindrick Golf Club,” said Kevin Rubin, a member at The Concession since its inception. I think that there’s definitely something to be said about playing English golfers. They are very humble and genuinely sincere about the game. They don’t get hung up on winning or losing but rather just have a love for the game and enjoy playing it for the camaraderie.”
Concession Member Ray Bromark, who was equally delighted with the events, added, “The events played at The Concession reinforced a number of things, including the fact that golf is a ‘gentleman’s game’ enjoyed by nice people all over the world. The friendly competition made me proud of our opponents, members of The Concession team and The Concession itself. I can now better understand why events like the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup are so popular.”
The Concession Golf Club won all three interclub tournaments and hopes to continue their winning ways in competition when they host teams from five elite private clubs from the Philadelphia area later this week in a competition that will include TV and radio coverage.
