BRADENTON, Fla. – Five teams from elite private golf clubs in the Philadelphia area will escape the cold winter temperatures of eastern Pennsylvania and travel to beautiful and sunny Sarasota, Florida to compete against The Concession Golf Club Dec. 2-4 for The Concession Cup.
The Concession Cup is a series of interclub tournaments designed to emulate the traditions, camaraderie and competition of the Ryder Cup matches, upon which The Concession Golf Club was built.
The Concession, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course designed in association with Tony Jacklin, was conceived in commemoration of the 1969 Ryder Cup singles match between the two where Nicklaus conceded a putt to Jacklin. That gesture, known as “the concession,” rendered the two teams in a 17-17 tie. The United States retained the Ryder Cup having won it in 1967. That moment marked the beginning of a lasting friendship between the two men and inspired one of America’s great golf clubs.
The Concession Cup format will be five nine-hole matches over a two-day period. All teams will play each other once, and the team with the best record wins. In the event of a tie, there will be a hole-by-hole playoff to determine the champ.
The matches will be televised on Comcast SportsNet in the eastern Pennsylvania area. Highlights of the event will also air on InsideGolf Dec. 19, 20 and 22. InsideGolf is a weekly magazine-style show that spotlights various public and private golf clubs by exploring the uniqueness of each facility and providing professional tips and instruction.
The competition will also be one of the main topics on GolfTalk Live, a radio show that airs Saturdays from 7 to 8 a.m. on WNTP 990-AM, a 50,000-watt station in Philadelphia. Listeners outside the broadcasting area can listen live by visiting www.wntp.com. After the show airs, golfers can listen any time in the next week by visiting the show’s Website www.golftalklive.net.
When the teams are not enjoying the course, they will benefit from the pleasures of the Sarasota area, including the arts, shopping, dining and one of the world’s Top 10 beaches-Siesta Key.
The five clubs from Pennsylvania include:
Plymouth Country Club, a William Flynn-designed golf course celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2012.
Cedarbrook Country Club, a William and David Gordon-designed course located on the outskirts of Ambler.
Indian Valley Country Club, a private country club about 30 miles northwest of Philadelphia located near Pennsylvania Dutch country.
Blue Bell Country Club, a very modern club with an Arnold Palmer-designed golf course that opened in 1994.
Jack Frost National, which was named one of the “Best New Courses in America” by Golfweek in 2009 and is located in the heart of the Pocono Mountains.
