Far Hills, N.J. (Dec. 6) – Johnny Miller, a two-time USGA champion, will serve as the honorary chairman of the 2012 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, which will be conducted July 9-14 at Soldier Hollow Golf Course at Wasatch Mountain State Park in Midway, Utah.
“The bottom line is that Utah knows golf,” Miller said. “I live about two miles away from Soldier Hollow and I wake up looking at the place. I practice there once in a while, too. There is nothing like the way people from Utah host an event. I am really looking forward to being involved and enjoying the championship at Soldier Hollow.”
“The USGA is honored to have Johnny Miller as our honorary chairman at this wonderful venue in his home state,” said Christie Austin, chairman of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Committee. “We are extremely grateful that Johnny has volunteered to assist the USGA in conducting the 2012 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, the first-ever USGA championship to be held in Utah.”
Miller, who won 25 times on the PGA Tour, is widely known as an analyst on NBC television golf broadcasts. He won the 1973 U.S. Open with a record final-round score of 63 at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club, overcoming a six-stroke deficit to defeat John Schlee by one stroke. He also won the 1964 U.S. Junior Amateur and the 1976 British Open. A 1996 inductee into the World Golf Hall of Fame, he is a longtime resident of Utah.
