Highly-anticipated Old Macdonald earns no. 1 spot
NORTHBROOK, Ill., Dec. 6, 2010 – KemperSports announced today that all four of the properties that it helped open in 2010 have been honored by GOLF Magazine. The list, which was published in the January 2011 issue of the magazine, utilized the magazine’s panel of raters to determine the top-10 new public golf courses.
Old Macdonald, the much-anticipated fourth course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, took home the top spot while The Golf Club at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Mich. (No. 3), Seneca Hickory Stick in Lewiston, NY, (No. 6) and Cape Fear National in Wilmington, NC, (No. 10) also made the list.
“We are very fortunate to have opened a quartet of fabulous golf courses for our clients this year,” said KemperSports CEO Steve Skinner. “Each of these projects is unique and well-deserving of this honor.”
Old Macdonald, designed by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina, opened to golfers on June 10, 2010, marking the 100-year anniversary of the founding of The National Golf Links of America in Southampton, N.Y. The course includes design attributes of the course’s namesake and the grandfather of golf course architecture in America, Charles Blair Macdonald.
Opened in August 2010, The Golf Club at Harbor Shores held its grand opening celebration by hosting the Champions for Change golf challenge featuring a charity skins match between course designer Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Johnny Miller. The master-planned community is in close proximity to Lake Michigan and sits along the beautiful St. Joseph and Paw Paw Rivers. The Golf Club at Harbor Shores will host the 2012 and 2014 Senior PGA Championships.
The par-72, Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-layout, Seneca Hickory Stick features manicured landscapes surrounded by stunning lakes and ponds that weave through native vegetation, wetlands and open meadows. Seneca Hickory Stick, stretching approximately 7,100 yards, is designed for the walking golfer and marks the first project developed by the Seneca Nation off of its sovereign territory. The property will serve as a high-end golf amenity to the Nation’s world-class gaming and entertainment facilities, including Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel, which is located in Niagara Falls, NY.
Cape Fear National is an 18-hole, Tim Cate-designed course that opened in April 2010. The course layout features a rippling landscape mixed with cypress, pine, maple, oak and magnolia trees. Multiple holes are intertwined throughout with preserved wetlands and scenic lakes to make for a natural and enjoyable walk through the course.
