Full Field Representing 25 states, Puerto Rico and Canada
ORLANDO, Fla. (Dec. 7, 2010) – The Golf Channel Am Tour is set to kick off its 2011 major championship season with a two-day major at Grand Cypress Golf Club Saturday and Sunday, featuring a full-field of 185 amateur players from throughout North America and Puerto Rico.
The Winter Championship will be contested on the North/South Course – site of last week’s season-ending LPGA Tour Championship – and the New Course, both Jack Nicklaus designs. The tournament will feature 11 flights, with the top-three individuals from each flight automatically qualifying for the 2011 Golf Channel Am Tour National Championships in September, 2011. The first round of stroke play will begin Saturday at 7:30 a.m. ET.
Four defending national champions from the 2010 season are scheduled to compete in the event, including:
Gio Swann, Lauderhill, Fla. (Palmer Flight – handicap 4.0-7.9)
Suneil Aggarwal, Alpharetta, Ga. (Jones Flight – handicap 16.0-19.9)
Don Miller, North Bay, Ontario (Senior Hogan Flight, handicap 8.0-11.9)
Rod Burns, Weston, Fla. (Senior Snead Flight, handicap 20+)
“The Golf Channel Am Tour is an amazing opportunity for non-professional golfers to play on a tour comparable to the professional tours, and we are excited to be playing on the same course that hosted the LPGA Tour Championship just last week,” said Kenny Booth, Golf Channel Am Tour national tournament director.
Grand Cypress Resort will serve as the tournament headquarters. Following the conclusion of Sunday’s second round of play, an awards ceremony will take place at the Nine 18 Restaurant at the Grand Cypress Clubhouse.
As the largest amateur golf tour in North America, the Golf Channel Am Tour is open to the public and provides the most professional tournament experience for players of all ages and abilities, as well as offering unparalleled access to some of the most renowned and challenging golf courses across the country.
