Fowler turned from amateur to professional golfer after playing in the 2009 Walker Cup. After qualifying in Q-School, the novice quickly caught worldwide attention when he enjoyed two second place finishes; one at the Phoenix Open and another at the Memorial. He also became the first tour rookie picked for the Ryder Cup team.

The 21 year old Fowler is the youngest PGA Rookie of the Year recipient since Tiger Woods who won the award at the age of 20.
