Byrd, Oosthuizen, Sheehan sweep worldwide professional tours trusting Pro V1
Fairhaven, MA (January 10, 2011) – As a new season begins across the world’s professional tours, it means a renewed focus on being the best player you can be. And for the overwhelming majority, it also means relying on the consistent performance of Titleist on every shot. At the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, it was an all-Titleist Pro V1 playoff where Jonathan Byrd edged Robert Garrigus on the second extra hole. On the European Tour, Louis Oosthuizen emerged from a three-way, all-Titleist Pro V1x playoff for victory at the Africa Open. On the Australasian Tour, Titleist Brand Ambassador Paul Sheehan captured the Victorian Open by two shots. Three tournaments. Three wins. And a new year with new dreams and a world of momentum for the #1 ball in golf.
TITLEIST HIGHLIGHTS FOR WEEK ENDING JANUARY 9, 2011
PGA TOUR: Byrd and Garrigus, both of whom qualified for the season-opening Tournament of Champions after winning their final tournaments of the 2010 season, finished with a 24-under 268 total.
CAMERON CRAZIES: The momentum continues for Scotty Cameron putters, as both playoff participants relied upon Studio Select Newport putters for their success. The winner trusted his Studio Select Newport putter, while the runner-up opted for the Newport Squareback. Cameron putters have been the choice of more players and more champions on the PGA TOUR for 12 years.
BYRD’S PERKS: The win is the fifth and most significant of Byrd’s PGA TOUR career. The victory qualified him for this season’s Masters, U.S. Open and at least one World Golf Championship, as well as a trip to back to Kapalua’s Plantation Course next January to defend his title. He advanced to No. 58 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
FINAL GROUP: Byrd played in the final group with Titleist Brand Ambassador Steve Stricker (Pro V1, 909D3 driver, 906F2 fairway metal, 909H hybrid, CB irons, Vokey Design wedges) who finished T-4, four shots out of the playoff.
POULTER STAYS HOT: Ian Poulter (Pro V1x) continued his momentum, finishing T-6. He has finished among the top six in each of his last five starts and risen to No. 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Titleist Brand Ambassador Bill Haas also finished in the Top 10, finishing in solo 8th.
CLARK JOINS TEAM TITLEIST: Titleist’s newest Brand Ambassador Tim Clark finished T-17 playing his new Titleist equipment for the first time in competition. His new Titleist bag includes the New Pro V1 prototype golf ball, 910D3 driver (10.5), 910F (15.0) fairway metal, CB irons (4-9), Vokey Design pitching (48), sand (54) and lob (60) wedges. Clark is ranked No. 27 in the world.
FIVE PROTOTYPES IN PLAY: Five players put a new Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x prototype golf ball in play at the Tournament of Champions. While Clark was the only New Pro V1 player, those relying upon the New Pro V1x included Jason Bohn, Ben Crane, Hunter Mahan and Bubba Watson.
BALL COUNT: Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball of choice at the event with 18 players trusting Titleist in the winners-only field, three times the nearest competitor with 6.
CLUB COUNTS: Titleist also was first in iron sets (10); sand, lob and approach wedges (25); and putters (T-10). Titleist was second in drivers (8), including 7 new 910D2 or 910D3 drivers; fairway metals (11); and hybrids (7).
EUROPEAN TOUR: Louis Oosthuizen birdied the first hole of a three-way all-Titleist Pro V1x playoff to win the Africa Open in his native South Africa. Oosthuizen, who started the final round tied for the lead, converted a 12-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole, to force the playoff.
– The trio, that also included Titleist golf ball loyalists Chris Wood and Manuel Quiros, tied for regulation at 16-under 276 following a final round that saw seven different leaders on the day. Wood relied upon the New Pro V1x prototype for his success.
– The win was Oosthuizen’s first since capturing the British Open for his first major victory at St. Andrews in July.
– Titleist was the overwhelming top choice in golf balls at the Africa Open with 117 players, more than eight times the nearest competitor with 14. Of the 13 players who finished among the top 10 and ties, nine relied upon Titleist golf balls, including four of whom played the New Pro V1 or Pro V1x prototypes.
AUSTRALASIAN TOUR: Titleist Brand Ambassador Paul Sheehan (Pro V1x, 910D2 driver, AP2 irons, Vokey Design wedges, Scotty Cameron putter) captured the first event on the 2011 Australasian Tour schedule, firing an 8-under 276 total to claim the Victorian Open.
– Sheehan finished two shots better than fellow Brand Ambassador Matthew Griffin (Pro V1x, 909D3 driver, 910F fairway metal, 910H hybrid, CB irons, Vokey Design wedges, Scotty Cameron putter).
– Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball of choice at the event with 116 players trusting Titleist, compared to 14 for the nearest competitor. Of the 12 players who finished among the Top 10 and ties, 10 trusted a Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x for their success.
