138 PGA professionals to compete for $100,000 winner’s check at Haverford Trust-sponsored event
RADNOR, PA – MAY 16, 2018 – With the largest first place prize available from any event held across the PGA of America’s 41 sections, the 22nd annual Haverford Philadelphia PGA Classic returns to Sunnybrook Golf Club in Plymouth Meeting, PA, on May 29. A field of 138 PGA Professionals from the Philadelphia section will vie for the first-place $100,000 prize.
The invitational tournament, originally conceived by Founder and current Director of The Haverford Trust Company, George Connell, has emerged as a keystone event on the Philadelphia PGA calendar, and is revered by PGA sections around the country. The tournament launched with a first place purse of $10,000, which Mr. Connell has increased over the years to encourage sportsmanship and competition.
“Thanks to Mr. Connell and Haverford Trust, our Philadelphia PGA members are presented an opportunity that is unprecedented, which makes this tournament so special,” said Geoff Surrette, Executive Director, Philadelphia Section PGA. “With a $100,000 first place prize, they are getting a tour-like experience and that’s pretty cool.”
“Our entire team at Haverford Trust is thrilled to support this annual tournament to inspire healthy competition among our region’s PGA professionals,” said Joe McLaughlin, Chairman & CEO of Haverford Trust. “We recognize the valuable role PGA Professionals play every day in growing the game and managing the business of golf around the country, and we appreciate their passion for a sport that is played by tens of millions of men, women, and children alike.”
Last year’s tournament saw Sunnybrook’s own Assistant PGA Professional, Andrew Turner, claim first place, finishing at 4-under par with a score of 68. Turner made an exciting finish, holding off a late charge from runner-up, Jake Gerney of Trump National Philadelphia, who finished 2 shots back. Nine others finished at 1-under par, to claim a joint tie for third place. Prior to his $100,000 first place prize, Turner’s largest golf purse was $6,000. The 33-year old defending Champion is a former professional mini-tour player and member of Liberty University’s golf team.
The 2018 tournament marks the 2nd year of Haverford’s partnership with the Philadelphia PGA Helping Our Patriots Everywhere (HOPE). PGA HOPE is the flagship military program of PGA REACH, the charitable foundation of the PGA of America. PGA HOPE introduces golf to Veterans with disabilities to enhance their physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being. To honor this partnership, Army CPL Kevin McCloskey, will be hitting the ceremonial tee shot.
