Vegas and Cook relied on Nike’s VR line of clubs en route to their wins
BEAVERTON, OR (January 24, 2011) – Nike athletes are making some noise early in the 2011 season having captured four victories on the professional tours around the globe, all of which were won with Nike’s VR line of clubs. This weekend, Jhonattan Vegas and John Cook joined fellow Nike athletes Charl Schwartzel and Pablo Martin in the winner’s circle.
Vegas made a powerful statement in only his second start as a PGA Tour member by claiming his first title at the Bob Hope Classic and becoming the first Venezuelan to win a PGA Tour event. It was a stunning victory as he produced five rounds in the 60’s, (64-67-67-66-69) and displayed his booming distance, impressive accuracy and sheer determination.
Known for his ability to overpower golf courses, Vegas averaged 309-yard drives with his Nike VR Pro driver. Equally impressive is the fact that he had two rounds in which he averaged 100% in driving accuracy. With a full bag of Nike’s successful VR line of clubs, Vegas ranked first in the number of birdies, having made 34 over 90 holes.
One of the key moments in his final round was on the par-5 sixth hole, where he made an eagle. From 230 yards out, Vegas hit his Nike VR Pro blade 5-iron to within 15 feet of the hole and sank the putt. Rounding out his Nike Golf arsenal were his Nike VR fairway woods and Nike VR wedges.
On the PGA’s Champions Tour, Cook also used Nike’s VR line of clubs en-route to his sixth Champions Tour victory. Cook finished tied for first in birdies with 21 over 54 holes. The long-time Nike athlete relied on his VR STR8-FIT driver to finish fifth in driving accuracy at 83.3%. Rounding out Cook’s arsenal is a Nike VR hybrid, VR Pro blade irons, VR wedges and a Nike Method putter. Cook finished second in putts per round and second in putts per GIR.
Both Vegas and Cook sported apparel from the Spring 2011 Nike Golf Tour Collection accompanied by the new and popular Nike Lunar Control footwear, which combines stability and comfort to ensure the perfect foundation for every shot.
