January 30, 2011 – Fairways + Greens Magazine added to its multi-year run of journalistic excellence at the 2011 International Network of Golf Media Awards, announced Jan. 27 during the 57th Annual PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla. The 14-year-old travel and lifestyle publication, celebrating its one-year anniversary under the Madavor Media ownership banner, nabbed one First Place nod for photography, two Outstanding Achievement awards for travel writing and one Outstanding Achievement for opinion writing.
Longtime Fairways + Greens competition photographer Bob Solorio took first-ever top honors for his perfectly composed shot of actor and avid celebrity golfer Don Cheadle during the 2010 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. The photo – taken during Cheadle’s round at Monterey Peninsula Country Club’s Shore Course, shows the dapperly dressed Academy Award-nominated actor kicking back on a rock between the 10th green and 11th tee.
“We chose to submit this shot not only for its excellent focus, color and composition, but for its emotional impact,” said Fairways + Greens Executive Editor Vic Williams. “It shows Cheadle deep in thought about the next shot, in what appears at first glance like posed posture but, in reality, is just a case of Bob’s being in the right place at the right time.” A similar image of Cheadle was used on the magazine’s May-June 2010 cover.
Williams took home two Outstanding Achievement awards for “Ryder Cup Rewards,” a travel piece on Celtic Manor in Wales that appeared in the September-October 2010 issue; and “Train Wreck of Timing,” a Weekend Wisdom column from March-April 2010 on the scheduling clash between the PGA Tour’s Reno-Tahoe Open and American Century Celebrity Championship. Design Director and Editor Darin Bunch followed up his strong showing in the previous year’s ING Awards with an Outstanding Achievement for “Howl for the Moon,” his May-June 2010 getaway piece on the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay resort in Northern California.
This year’s quartet of awards led all magazines entered in the ING competition, beating out such well-respected nationals as Golfweek. “Since we started entering our work in this competition six or seven years ago, we’ve proved that we can hang with any golf magazine in the country when it comes to editorial and graphic excellence,” Williams continued. “And now that we publish America’s only national magazine dedicated to golf travel and lifestyle, we expect only bigger success for the future.”
Frequent Fairways + Greens contributors Katharine Dyson and Tony Dear also took home multiple awards for their travel, competition and apparel writing.
