Lion Lake CC in China and Bowes Creek CC in Elgin, Ill. finish among top international golf course developments; Bowes Creek CC also recognized by Landscape Architects
LIBERTYVILLE, Illinois (January 31, 2011) – Chicago area golf course architect Rick Jacobson has been honored for his outstanding design work both across town and across the world.
Jacobson’s Lion Lake Country Club in China has been named a top-three international golf course development for 2010 by Golf Inc. Magazine, which announced the awards in its current issue.
Moreover, Jacobson’s Bowes Creek Country Club in Elgin, Illinois finished among the magazine’s top six developments worldwide for 2010.
“We are proud and pleased that both Lion Lake and Bowes Creek country clubs have been included among Golf Inc.’s 2010 Development of the Year Awards, which encompass courses from all over the world,” Jacobson said.
Earlier, Jacobson’s Moon Course at Lion Lake County Club near the city of Guangzhou (a/k/a Canton), was named Best Golf Course Design by China Golf Magazine. In addition, the course has been selected as the 2010 Best New Golf Club in China at the People’s Choice Awards; was rated among the Top 10 Golf Courses in China by China Golf Magazine, and was highlighted out as “My Favorite Golf Club” by China Golf Magazine.
Jacobson currently is building a second 18-hole layout at Lion Lake called the Moonlight Course. The Lion Lake facility is a mixed-use hotel, resort, residential, and office development located in the China’s largest golf market. Internationally known golf course management firm Troon Golf operates the golf facilities.
Meanwhile, in the United States, public golfers and critics alike have warmly embraced Bowes Creek as a welcome new entry into the highly competitive Chicago golf market. Owned and operated by the city of Elgin, located west of Chicago, Bowes Creek is an18-hole “country club for a day” that challenges the better player while providing an enjoyable experience for average players and beginners while achieving a high standard of aesthetic quality.
Also for his work on Bowes Creek, Jacobson earned a Merit Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects (Illinois) for projects that “demonstrate merit in design and/or environmental responsibility.” Whether he is working on an international or a domestic project, Jacobson always casts a sensitive eye on his work’s lasting affects on the environment.
Jacobson recently broke ground on another China project, the Mogan Mountain Golf Club near Hangzhou, a city of approximately 3 million located in the Yangtze River Delta about 160 kilometers (100 miles) from Shanghai.
Jacobson has been active in international golf course design since he opened his own firm in 1991 following several years with Jack Nicklaus. Jacobson’s first original 18-hole design was the World Country Club in Osaka, Japan. Jacobson currently is working on several other projects in Asia.
Jacobson reunited with Nicklaus domestically when the two collaborated on Bayside Resort and Golf Club in Fenwick Island, Del. Both Golf Digest magazine and Golfweek magazine named Bayside among the top new courses for 2006.
Voted Golf Course Architect of the Year in 2007 by the National Association of Private Clubs and Directors, Jacobson is known nationally for such heralded original 18-hole designs as Augustine GC in Stafford, Va., Bull Run CC in Haymarket, Va., Bear Trap Dunes in Ocean View, Del., and The Club at Strawberry Creek in Kenosha, Wis.
