(LAHAINA, HI) – Craig Trenholme, Superintendent at Ka’anapali Golf Courses managed by Billy Casper Golf, was named “2010 Superintendent of the Year” by the Hawaii Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.
At Ka’anapali since 2006, Trenholme is recognized by for presenting year-round, tournament-ready conditions on the Royal Ka’anapali Course, host of the Champions Tour SKINS Game. The Ka’anapali Kai Course has been transformed into a local favorite with its greens regarded as the best on Maui. Overseeing renovation of the Royal Ka’anapali Course, Trenholme is credited with returning course conditions of all 36 holes to their original luster.
Trenholme’s contributions helped Ka’anapali rank No. 11 “Best Tour Course You Can Play” by Golfweek and earn a 4.5-star (out of five) rating in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” guide.
“This award is well-deserved; Craig has the knowledge, leadership skills and drive to succeed,” says Ed Kageyama, PGA General Manager of Ka’anapali. “Craig and his staff work incredibly hard each day to ensure we provide phenomenal playing conditions for local golfers, guests from around the world and TOUR stars.”
Originally from Chicago, Trenholme began his career in the Hawaiian sugar industry, then transitioning to golf-course maintenance as an irrigation specialist at Hualalai Resort on the Big Island. Prior to joining Ka’anapali, he spent seven years at Kapalua Resort, overseeing all three courses, including preparation for the PGA TOUR season-opening event.
The Royal Ka’anapali Course, a Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design, opened in 1962 and has tested the skills of professional and amateur golfers. A par-71, 6,700-yard layout, the Royal Course combines wide fairways and undulating greens, making it distinctive, demanding and exciting, hole to hole. With more than 45 years of tournament history, the Royal Course has hosted many of golf’s greatest legends: Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Billy Casper, Amy Alcott, Jan Stephenson and Nancy Lopez.
The Ka’anapali Kai Course – a par-70, 6,400-yard gem – places an emphasis on proper club selection and placement off the tee, allowing for a better approach shot into the large, bunker-protected greens.
The resort underwent a $13 million renovation in 2005-2006 and was given a 4.5-star rating (out of five) by Golf Digest in the magazine’s recent “Best Places to Play” guide. Ka’anapali was selected by The Golf Channel to host “Big Break Ka’anapali” that aired in 2008.
