(POCONO MOUNTAINS, PA.) — The Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau is readying for a robust golf season as courses prepare for March and April openings. The destination will celebrate a Century of Golf this year, honoring a story that began in 1911 at Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort – A.W. Tillinghast’s first American design.

Golf Card on Tap for Spring Purchase
Several of the more than 35 golf courses in the destination will participate in Pocono Mountains Golf-Around Card, which will provide discounted greens fees throughout the 2011 golf season. Cards can be purchased later this spring for $40 at participating golf courses, with applicable rounds based on availability at each outlet. The Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau hopes to unveil the card in March.

Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort Reveals Centennial Cup Schedule
In celebration of its 100th Anniversary and America’s first A.W. Tillinghast design, Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort will host four golf events in the spring and summer, leading to the inaugural Centennial Cup Championship. The fun-inspired, two-person events are scheduled April 9, May 29, July 2 and August 14 in varying formats (best ball, combined score, shamble and alternate shot), leading to the September 3 Championship.
Golfers who participate in at least two of the events are eligible to play in the championship; those who participate in all four events will enter the championship for free. Rates start at $70 per golfer, per event, and include greens fees and dinner.

The resort is offering a “Golf for Free” program in April to kick off the 2011 Centennial golf season. Guests pay only a $25 cart fee for the month, based on availability. Some restrictions do apply; those interested can call the resort at 800-SHAWNEE.
Inn at Pocono Manor Ready for Golf Season with Property Upgrades, New Golf Schools
The Inn at Pocono Manor is scheduled to complete $4 million in renovations in time for the spring golf season. Guestrooms, public spaces, restaurants, lobby areas and meeting rooms will all receive an update as part of the project.
The Inn has added eight one-day golf schools to its offering in the spring, as well as eight short-game schools, to prepare golfers for lower scores throughout the season.

20th Ice Tee Event Records Largest Crowds in Event History
More than 350 golfers braved the weather for Hawley’s 20th Ice Tee Tournament on Lake Wallenpaupack. Among them was 90-year old Michael Dewar, who easily captured the oldest golfer spot, and “Most Honest” low scorer winners Tammy Borkowski (score of 58) and Bill Schleiker (score of 67).
