520-acre layout tough enough to meet USGA criterion for major championship
BRADENTON, Fla. – The Concession Golf Club, named “Best New Private Course of 2006” by Golf Digest magazine, was recently recognized by LINKS Magazine in their 2011 “List Issue” as one of their Top 10 choices to host a future U.S. Open Championship.
Designed by 4-time U.S. Open champion Jack Nicklaus, in association with former U.S. Open champ Tony Jacklin; The Concession would be the first Nicklaus Signature course, if chosen, to host the prestigious major.
The Concession was designed in commemoration of the 1969 Ryder Cup singles match between the two where Nicklaus conceded a putt to Jacklin. That gesture, known as “the concession,” rendered the two teams in a 17-17 tie. The United States retained the Ryder Cup having won it in 1967. That moment marked the beginning of a lasting friendship between the two men and inspired one of America’s great golf clubs.
According to LINKS Magazine editors, The Concession Golf Club met a number of criteria worth consideration to host the U.S. Open.
This 18-hole par 72 design is set on 520 acres of ruggedly pristine land dotted with massive oaks and majestic pines. It totals 7,470 yards and runs three miles from tip to tip. The property is big enough for all the logistical demands of the U.S. Open. The layout of The Concession also has plenty of risk-reward propositions, which fit with the United States Golf Association’s U.S. Open competition standards.
The Concession has an Advanced Aer system enabling the USGA to have the ability to make the greens as firm as they want. (The Aer system is a subterranean climate control wireless computer system that manages irrigation, drainage and pH balance beneath all the greens.). The closely mowed turf and contours around the greens are perfect for the fast, firm conditions that the USGA is looking for when choosing a U.S. Open site.
While Florida has the most courses per capita in the country, the state has never hosted the nation’s most prestigious event. Although several new public courses have been awarded the U.S. Open in the past, that honor has not been bestowed upon a new private course.
Another benefit to hosting a massive event as the U.S. Open is the location of The Concession Golf Club. Located in the Bradenton/Sarasota area, the club is easily accessible by Florida’s interstate and three surrounding international airports including Tampa, St. Petersburg/Clearwater and Ft. Meyers.
