PALO ALTO, California, March 8, 2011 – Golf course architecture icon Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-one of the first golf designers to work in Asia back in the 1970s-will deliver the keynote address at the upcoming China Golf Show, to be held in Beijing March 18-20. Jones, whose firm, Robert Trent Jones II, Golf Course Architects (RTJ II), has created more than 80 golf courses in the region, including the top ranked layouts in several Asian nations and four of the top ten courses in China, will also address attendees at a seminar focused on environmentally responsible golf design. The visit is part of a larger swing throughout the Far East to further promote the company’s award-winning work in the growing Asian market.
Jones says of the Beijing show, “This is a great opportunity for people in the golf business to discuss the most important issue facing us today: how to create great new venues for the Royal and Ancient game while protecting the environment and ever-scarcer commodities such as land, water, and green spaces.
“We’ve been working in Asia for nearly 40 years,” Jones continues. “While we have always counted environmental protection as among the most important of values, I believe we are seeing the next green wave breaking upon the Asian shore: because of the shortage of great land zoned for golf course development, architects will be asked to create new world-class layouts on degraded sites such as mines, swamps and industrial zones.”
Robert Trent Jones II, Golf Course Architects has executed a number of such projects, from turning a site at the Hong Fatt tin mine in Malaysia into the award winning The Mines Golf Club, to transforming an abandoned gravel mine in Washington State into Chambers Bay, a golf venue ranked so highly that the United States Golf Association (USGA) has chosen it to host the U.S. Open Championship in 2015.
Jones first visited China at the invitation of Deng Xiaping after being introduced to him by President Carter in 1979. And recently, he was the only representative of the golf business invited to a luncheon for current Chinese President Hu Jintao. Jones’ upcoming appearance at the China Golf Show carries the firm’s long legacy in Asia forward into the future.
