San Jose, Calif. – The Western Intercollegiate, a premiere golf event revered by top-notch collegiate players, is set for April 15-17, 2011 at the majestic Alister MacKenzie-designed Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, California.
According to San Jose State University men’s golf coach John Kennaday, the 2011 Western Intercollegiate has attracted high-profile teams starting with the Augusta State Jaguars, the defending NCAA Division I champion. Oregon returns with hopes of winning a third consecutive Western Intercollegiate team title.
Arizona State, San Diego State, Stanford, Cal, UCLA, Southern California and Washington are current top-25 nationally-ranked teams in a star-studded 15-team field.
Host San Jose State, New Mexico State and UC Irvine are three top-100 nationally-ranked squads that can compete meaningfully for the 65th annual Western Intercollegiate title, too. Colorado, Denver, and Hawaii round out one of the best spring tournaments in men’s college golf according to Golf Digest’s January 2011 issue.
The Western Intercollegiate is one of the longest-running collegiate competitions in the nation and is contested at a venue that is ranked amongst the best by GolfWeek, Golf Magazine and the Zagat Survey.
Echoing the success of 64 uninterrupted years of fascinating golf, top collegiate players, coaches, and business leaders are marking their calendars now for the Western Intercollegiate College-Am set for Friday, April 15.
“Friday’s practice round and college-am present an excellent opportunity for amateur golfers to tee it up with talented collegiate players on one of the world’s finest courses,” states Coach Kennaday. “It’s also an ideal venue for alumni and business community leaders to gather in support of collegiate golf.”
As for the 54-hole Western Intercollegiate (April 16-17), spectators are invited to be in the gallery and follow their favorite five-man team and respective players throughout a magnificently-restored Pasatiempo golf course.
Over the years, noted players met the challenge and claimed title to “The Western” at Pasatiempo including Bobby Clampett, Peter Jacobson, Mark Lye, Johnny Miller, Arron Oberholser, Mark O’Meara and Ken Venturi.
