SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (March 22, 2011) – The results of Gateway Pro Tour’s “Points Race” will be announced at the conclusion of this week’s tournament at Papago Golf Club. The winner will receive an exemption for the BMW Charity Pro-Am Presented by SYNNEXX (May 19-22). ONLY Gateway Pro Tour members are eligible to compete for the exemption.
The “Points Race” consists of three tournaments during Arizona Series Package #3 (tournaments 7-9), with the leading cumulative point winner for those three events earning the exemption. The three tournaments during Package #3 were played at Wigwam Red (Mar. 8-10), Wigwam Gold (Mar. 15-17) and this week at Papago Golf Club (Mar. 23-25).
All GPT members were offered the option to participate by paying a $100 entry fee by Monday, Feb. 28. Memberships are available throughout the season, so non-members still have time to sign up.
“These Nationwide Tour exemptions are extremely valuable to our players so we wanted to come up with a format that was challenging and fair to all those competing,” said Ryan Pray, Executive Director of Gateway Pro Tour. “This format is similar to our Q-School Challenge last year that received a great response from the players, so we decided to do something similar to award this first exemption.”
This is the first of two Nationwide Tour exemptions GPT has been granted for the 2011 season. Tournament officials will announce the format details for the Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open (June 16-19) after the first exemption has been awarded.
The 2011 season will feature a total of 30 events January through October, including 19 tournaments in the Arizona Series, six events in the Southern California Series, a four-tournament Q-School Challenge Series and a season-ending Tour Championship at The Club at Prescott Lakes in Prescott, Ariz., Oct. 5-8.
