Major winner ends nine-year drought using FG Tour irons
CHICAGO, March 28 – A little more than a year after signing with Wilson Golf for a second time in his career, former Open champion Paul Lawrie ended a drought of nine years without a Tour win by taking the Open de Andalucia title by a stroke in Malaga yesterday.
Using the award-winning Wilson Staff FG Tour irons and wedges, Lawrie won his sixth European Tour title with an even-par final round for a 12-under total of 268.
“I started hitting beautiful shots on the back nine…I must say that I felt under control even when I was above par at the start,” he said. One reporter observed that he controlled his golf ball with “a surgeon’s touch.”
The popular Scotsman first signed with Wilson in 1993 and went on to win The Open Championship at Carnoustie six years later with Wilson Staff irons – coming from six shots back and winning the dramatic playoff with magnificent approach shots on the final two holes.
In January 2010, he signed a new agreement with Wilson after his success with the new Wilson Staff FG Tour irons during a trial period.
“We are very pleased for Paul and delighted that he has won another title with Wilson Staff irons,” said Doug Wright, Business Director of Wilson Golf in Europe. “The victory shows the competitive strength of the Wilson Staff FG Tour irons that more and more golfers are switching to,” he added.
