Dr. Richard Berkun and his wife, Sue, are sponsoring the 2nd Annual Scramble for the Cure, a golf tournament to benefit Susan G. Komen 3-DAY for the Cure. The couple are registered to walk in the
3-DAY in Washington, DC in September with the Million Dollar Babies team. They will walk 60 miles over the course of three days with thousands of other men and women to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research and education. In order to participate in the event, each walker must raise $2,300.
Scramble for the Cure will be held at TPC Prestancia on Saturday, May 14, 2011. The format of the tournament is a 4-person scramble with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun. Immediately following the tournament, there will be awards, great raffles, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar in the clubhouse. The picturesque private golf club is located at 4409 TPC Drive in Sarasota and features two 18-hole championship golf courses. TPC Prestancia has been the host club for eight Chrysler Cup Tournaments and five American Express Invitational’s Champions Tour events. To download an entry form for the charity golf tournament, please visit Dr. Berkun’s office website at www.CortezFootAndAnkle.com. The entry form also includes information regarding sponsorship opportunities, as well as donations for raffle prizes.
Rick Berkun is looking very forward to participating in his second 3-DAY. “Walking 60 miles is definitely a physical challenge and one in which you must prepare your body and feet to endure,” says Berkun. “It actually worked out pretty well for our team, considering they had their own team podiatrist.” Dr. Berkun said that his wife is a runner and got an injury just prior to last year’s 3-DAY, but she still walked all 60 miles… in a stress fracture boot! This will be Sue Berkun’s sixth year participating in the annual event. Her mother, Marilyn Royal, is a two-time breast cancer survivor. Sue says, “This year, the Million Dollar Babies will rally for our 28 year-old teammate, Bridget Spence, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in 2005, just one week after graduating cum laude from Boston University.” Bridget is a coach for 3-DAY for the Cure, and has dedicated her life to raising awareness about breast health in young women, speaking at high schools and colleges across the country about the importance of breast self awareness and early detection. While the Million Dollar Babies team continues to recruit team members, they’re currently a force of fifteen, and three of whom are men.
