French Lick, IN – The Pete Dye Course and Donald Ross Course at French Lick Resort in southern Indiana have debuted on Golf Digest’s elite list of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.
The publication’s biennial review of America’s top courses appears in the May 2011 issue. Golf Digest used over 1,000 members of its Course Ranking Panel and asked each to submit ballots based on such areas as shot values, resistance to scoring, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning, and ambience.
“We are very honored to be recognized by Golf Digest and having both of our courses ranked among America’s 100 Greatest Public,” said Dave Harner, French Lick Resort’s director of golf. “These rankings and the combination of the Dye and Ross courses continue to solidify French Lick Resort as one of the elite golf resort destinations in the country.”
The Pete Dye course, ranked No. 18 on the list, joins five other top courses from the Midwest ranked in the top 20 including Whistling Straits (Straits) and Blackwolf Run in Wisconsin, Arcadia Bluffs and Forest Dunes in Michigan, and The Quarry at Giants Ridge in Minnesota.
The Dye course is regarded as one of the most breathtaking and exciting 18 holes of golf in the country. The course was carefully carved on a dramatic hilltop offering a variety of elevation changes, rugged and dramatic terrain, narrow fairways and challenging bunkers. There are spectacular views from every hole, some that stretch for over 40 miles.
The historic Donald Ross course, ranked No. 99 on the list, hosted the 1924 PGA Championship and recently completed a multi-million dollar restoration. The Ross course is a parkland gem meandering up and down the rolling hills a few miles from the French Lick Springs Hotel. The wonderful routing of the holes take full advantage of the many elevation points for the classic Ross greens which slope dramatically from back to front. It is one of only two public Ross courses in the state of Indiana.
