(SILVERTHORNE, CO.) – Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks – ranked among the best courses in Colorado by Golfweek and GOLF Magazine – today announces Caleb Kehrwald has been named general manager.
Kehrwald will oversee operations at the Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry and Tom Lehman-designed layout situated at more than 9,000-feet, and located just over an hour from Denver. He moves over from the superintendent position, where he oversaw the agronomic restoration of the golf course to its original Alister Mackenzie-inspired form. Prior to Raven at Three Peaks, Kehrwald served as superintendent at Coyote Creek (Fort Lupton, Colo.). He began his career in Minnesota, where he worked at several courses and attended University of Minnesota – Crookston.
“Caleb’s leadership and extensive agronomic experience with high-altitude grasses and playing conditions helped morph Raven at Three Peaks into one of the truly great mountain golf experiences in the U.S.,” says David McDonald, president of owner/operator Escalante Golf. “He possesses a strong command of operations and retail, is customer service driven and relates to both our local and transient market golfers.”
“Raven at Three Peaks is a special place with a reputation as one of Colorado’s most memorable courses,” says Kehrwald. “As a staff, we look forward to ensuring golfers receive best-in-class service that enhances their playing experience.”
Raven at Three Peaks now has a Facebook page housing real-time course and weather conditions, promotions, photos, videos and a forum for discussions between golfers and staff. About Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks
Opened in 2000, Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks was designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry (Hurdzan/Fry Environmental Golf Design) and British Open and Senior PGA Champion Tom Lehman. It was the fourth “Raven” branded course in America and remains the only Raven facility in Colorado.
Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks is a rare combination of a championship layout set against a panorama of towering pines, snow-capped mountains, crystal clear streams and wildflower meadows. In creating one of the great golf experiences in the American West, Hurdzan/Fry and Lehman utilized the routing of the former Dick Phelps-designed Eagle’s Nest Golf Course to create a playing surface on which every hole, landing area and shot value maintains its design integrity and takes advantage of the site’s natural terrain.
The front nine climbs toward the upper reaches of the golf course, culminating at the 533-yard, par-5 sixth hole (“Warriors Mark”), the highest point on the golf course. In plain view from the tee box are the signature “Three Peaks” for which the course is named. The back nine flows across the distinctive mountainous terrain, leveling off relative to the roller-coast ride out, yet still choc-full of dramatic shot-making.
Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks closes with one of the strongest finishing stretches in Colorado, with the final four holes providing a PGA TOUR-level ending to an unforgettable round of golf. The 601-yard, par-5 16th features a 150-foot drop from the tee to the landing area below. It is an unforgettable prelude to the two final par 4s, stout two-shotters measuring 468 and 448 yards, respectively.
Unique to the region, Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks’ bunkers are patterned after the distinctive style first introduced by Alister Mackenzie at Cypress Point, Royal Melbourne, and Kingston Heath. Steep faces and deep furrowed edges give way to native grasses perched at the edge of the sand. In addition to being visually dramatic, the “Mackenzie bunkers” frame the golf course and help contain tee shots that can have up to a 10-percent increase in carry due to the course elevation.
Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks’ 12,400-square-foot clubhouse features a strong and clean Alpine architectural style with a mountain lodge post-and-beam pine interior. It houses a fully-equipped pro shop, the “Raven Grill” serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, a member’s locker room with ample space for meetings and special events. A variety of membership levels are available for golfers desiring the benefits of a semi-private facility.
