ORLANDO, Fla. (May 12, 2011) – Golfweek – the most authentic, authoritative and independent voice in golf – will feature its fourth-annual rankings of Golfweek’s Best Municipal Courses as part of its upcoming May 13 issue. The most accessible of the Golfweek’s Best rankings, the 2010-2011 Municipal Courses list spotlights the nation’s top 50 government-owned layouts that have raised the bar for public golf in the United States.
“Once upon a time, the term ‘munis’ referred to beat up old dirt patches for golf,” said Bradley S. Klein, national director of Golfweek’s Best Courses ratings program. “Nowadays, ‘muni’ golf means high-quality architecture and maintenance, including U.S. Open venues like Bethpage-Black (No. 1 on our list), Chambers Bay (No. 2) and Torrey Pines-South (No. 5). It also means affordable, accessible golf that’s woven into the fabric of the community.”
In addition to these three major hosts, nine newcomers broke onto this year’s list, including No. 7 Arrowhead Pointe (Elberton, Ga.), No. 9 Highlands of Elgin (Elgin, Ill.), No. 19 Sleepy Hollow Golf Course (Brecksville, Ohio) and No. 48 Neshanic Valley (Neshanic Station, N.J.), which returned to the 2010-2011 rankings after a year’s absence.
To produce Golfweek’s Best Municipal Courses list, an expert team of 675 evaluators rated each layout on the basis of 10 criteria, including routing, conditioning, variety and memorability of holes. The result is an average of scores, which then dictates a course’s overall ranking.
