Renowned private club features golf’s first desert-style course

Scottsdale, Ariz. (May 27, 2011) – Troon Golf,® the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing is pleased to announce it has been selected to oversee agronomy and maintenance at Desert Forest Golf Club, a private member-owned club in Carefree, Ariz.

Desert Forest Golf Club is widely considered the first desert-style course ever built. In 1962, architect Robert “Red” Lawrence carved the course from the existing desert landscape, with virtually no soil removed or shaped during construction. Its natural setting remains the hallmark of the course, with its desert characteristics proudly and beautifully displayed for the discerning eye to see and the dedicated golfer to appreciate.

“Desert Forest Golf Club is truly a historic property featuring one of the most highly acclaimed desert layouts ever constructed,” stated Jeff Spangler, senior vice president of science and agronomy, Troon Golf. “We are thrilled at the opportunity to oversee the agronomy practices at Desert Forest and to exceed the expectations of its members.”

Many elements contribute to Desert Forest Golf Club’s unique and challenging charm. Unlike many golf courses, Desert Forest has no out-of-bounds-markers. Its fairways are bordered by native desert vegetation and contain no bunkers or water hazards. Its unique attributes and location, which is considered the most scenic area of the Sonoran Desert, combine to create a true test of golf in a setting that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is challenging.

“Partnering with Troon Golf, which is known around the world for delivering the highest standards of quality control and agronomy, allows Desert Forest to secure its reputation of providing the best course conditions to its members and guests,” stated David Givnish, admissions committee chairman at Desert Forest Golf Club.

Desert Forest enjoys a storied history marked by accolades from golf’s most respected publications. Among them include recognition on Golf Digest’s list of the “100 Best Courses in America,” consistently awarded to Desert Forest since the rankings began more than 40 years ago; regular appearances on the “Top 100 Courses in the U.S.” list by Golf Magazine (currently ranked No. 94); two holes were also named in Golf Magazine’s list of “The World’s 500 Greatest Golf Holes;” and the course also consistently appears on Golfweek’s “America’s Top 100 Modern Courses” list (currently ranked No. 39).

Headquartered in Scottsdale, Ariz., Troon Golf is the world’s largest golf management company, overseeing operations at properties located in 31 states and 24 countries. Additionally, 46 Troon Golf facilities enjoy a Top 100 ranking by national or international publications. Troon Golf properties include Troon North Golf Club, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii; and Turnberry Resort, Ayrshire, Scotland.
