ORLANDO, Fla. (May 26, 2011) – Golfweek will host its 29th annual Father & Son Open this Father’s Day weekend (June 17-19) at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla. Open to amateur and professional golfers of all ages, this event has been a tradition since 1983, gathering players for both friendly sport and the presentation of the 2011 Father of the Year award.
“The Golfweek Father & Son Open has become one of our most popular events because it allows golfers the opportunity to come together to appreciate fathers, family, community and the game of golf,” said Armand Cimaroli, Golfweek’s director of events.
This event – which features a two-man, 36-hole Modified Chapman (alternate shot) format – will be played on the Island and Highlands North courses at Innisbrook, home of the PGA Tour’s Transitions Championship. The field will be divided into flights according to combined handicaps, with prizes being awarded to the top teams in each flight.
In conjunction with the competition, Golfweek will also present its 2011 Father of the Year award. This year’s honoree, Cliff Kresge, is being recognized for his continual dedication to the game of golf as well as his contributions to his community as a whole. A three-time winner on the Nationwide Tour who has participated in both the PGA and Nationwide Tours for the better part of two decades, Kresge focuses his time on autism awareness in addition to his golf game. Kresge, whose son Mason is autistic, conducts the annual Kresge’s Krew Tournament every year in Kingsport, Tenn., to benefit autism research. With this award, Kresge will join a long line of noteworthy Father of the Year honorees, including Karsten Solheim, Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Billy Casper.
