Player, McDowell and Creamer headline international field at Celtic Manor
ORLANDO, Fla., May 27, 2011 — PowerPlay Golf, the first in a series of nine-hole, risk-and-reward golf tournaments, made its worldwide television debut on Monday, featuring a star-studded international field and contested live on Golf Channel. PowerPlay Golf will re-air Tuesday on Golf Channel from 8-11 p.m. ET.
PowerPlay Golf’s unique tournament format is designed to create an exciting strategic spin on scoring, adding drama and a new look for golf on television. The tournament’s nine-hole, ‘most points wins’ scoring format features two flagsticks on every green. There is a risk-reward decision made on each hole. Golfers can choose to play to the regulation hole placement – designated by a White Flag – or try to score extra points by playing to the more difficult placement – the Black Flag. Opting for the Black Flag will be called a “PowerPlay,” with each player required to designate three PowerPlays for the first eight holes. The ninth hole will provide a chance to not only score bonus points, but also a risk to lose more points.
Taking place at The Twenty Ten Course at The Celtic Manor Resort – site of the 2010 Ryder Cup – the 12-player field will be headlined by hall-of-famer Gary Player, U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell, U.S. Women’s Open champion Paula Creamer and Englishmen Ian Poulter and Paul Casey. Rounding out the field are John Daly, Ian Woosnam, Helen Alfredsson, Caroline Hedwall, Thongchai Jaidee, Maximillian Kieffer and Victor Dubuisson. Overall, this group has combined for more than 300 professional victories, including 18 major championships.
