LAKE MARY, FL – Twice in the past four years in the ING/International Pairs World Qualifier, George Baker and Mike Vandiver have come within one point of wining the competition and earning a trip to the world finals in Scotland.
“One yipped putt here, one bad chip there…it was really disappointing,” said Vandiver, who along with Baker manages the Razor Golf equipment company just north of Tampa. “This year, we were determined not to let that happen again.”
Mission accomplished. Baker and Vandiver teamed for 43 points in the best-ball modified Stableford qualifying event on the highly ranked Innisbrook Island Course. That was good enough for a four-point victory over the second-place team of Jim Smith and Tim Branco. Another point back in third were Reid Nelson and Jack O’Leary.
The competition was part of the 21st ING Spring Conference at Innisbrook Resort May 22-26. This annual networking and educational gathering is conducted by the non-profit International Network of Golf.
The victory earned for Baker and Vandiver a trip Loch Lomond in Scotland to represent the USA and the ING in the eighth International Pairs World Finals Oct. 16-18. This year the World Final will be staged at Cameron House on Loch Lomond, Scotland, and played on The Carrick Championship course, opened in 2007. Most expenses are covered for the two in the sponsorship arrangement between International Pairs and ING. Jackets Required also provides jackets for the USA team.
The International Network Of Golf, a 21-year-old non-profit, media-based networking organization whose mission is to bring together members of the media and business communities to enhance communication in golf, conducts the conference. ING is open to anyone in the golf industry or media.
