Funnyman David Feherty begins 12-episode series of ‘unfiltered’ interviews and hilarious situations; Charles Barkley, Don Cheadle and Tom Watson featured in future episodes
ORLANDO, Fla. (June 17, 2011) – On Monday’s 10 p.m. ET debut of his much-anticipated Golf Channel series, David Feherty will be granted rare access to the normally private, but ever-entertaining Lee Trevino for an extended conversation about the self-made golfer and hall-of-famer’s life and career.
On the heels of this week’s playing of the U.S. Open and 40 years after his memorable 18-hole playoff victory over Jack Nicklaus in the 1971 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club, Trevino not only will remember his greatest wins and funniest stories, but also will reveal how a poor boy of Mexican ancestry from Dallas, Texas, overcame the odds to become arguably the greatest shotmaker and one of the most-loved personalities in the history of golf. The interview also will reveal Trevino’s personal thoughts on Jack Nicklaus – the man – and Tiger Woods – the golfer.
Feherty has been an admirer of Trevino since childhood – often pretending to be the great golfer during practice sessions. But even when both were playing professionally, Feherty says he never got close enough to really know Trevino. “I’d heard some of the stories before, but never in context and never from the man, himself,” he said.
A self-admitted alcoholic who suffers from mental illness, Feherty also will share a personal story of his own addictions in the first episode and how he continues to fight his demons every day.
The series’ premiere episode of Feherty will be presented as a special hour-long version. The show also will encore on Tuesday night when the 12-episode series settles into its regular Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET timeslot.
Feherty has been called “one of the funniest men in the game” by Yahoo! Sports, “funny, irreverent and positively brilliant” by PGATOUR.com and a personality known for his “sharp wit and blunt humor” by the Dallas Morning News. The Feherty series will feature what the Northern Irishman-turned-American citizen calls “unfiltered” interviews.
In future episodes, Feherty will visit a suburban Los Angeles art center to do some play-acting with Academy Award-nominated actor Don Cheadle (June 28). He’ll travel to Stillwell, Kan., to visit with legendary golfer Tom Watson at his picturesque and spacious family ranch (July 5). And basketball hall-of-famer and candid commentator Charles Barkley will bring his own brand of candor to the show in the series’ fourth week (July 12).
Surrounding the interviews in the 30-minute episodes, Feherty will demonstrate why he’s called golf’s funnyman through a variety of video shorts, storytelling and character play, as well as poignant and humorous observations on the peculiarities of life.
