New York, NY – June 22, 2011 -J.J. Henry, a veteran of the PGA Tour and a native of Fairfield, CT will be on the links this weekend at the Travelers Championship, which starts today at TPC River Highland, but wishes his schedule would also allow him to compete in the newest tour, The Family Golf Challenge, which will be hosted at Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course in nearby Fairfield.
Connecticut will become the third state in the metropolitan region to host a leg of The Family Golf Challenge , the new skills challenge for families which is scheduled from 10AM-6PM on Saturday, June 25 and 11AM-4PM on Sunday, June 26. The First Tee at Fairchild Wheeler will be the event beneficiary and receive $5.00 of each $15.00 team registration-fee.
“I was exposed to golf at a young age by my father, who had played in numerous British and U.S. Amateurs. Many do not have that kind of opportunity. In order for us to grow the sport for new generations of golfers, we have to continue to introduce the game to youngsters. The Family Golf Challenge accomplishes this by giving kids from all walks of life a chance to try their hand at putting or hitting a long drive, in a fun, affordable and competitive fashion. More importantly, it allows them to bond with family members while helping a great charitable cause like The First Tee. I can’t wait until The Family Golf Challenge returns to Connecticut next year so I can play with my son who will be 7 and eligible to compete.”
Henry is a strong supporter of The First Tee. For the second consecutive year, he will be hosting the J.J. Henry Invitational, a charity-based golf outing to be held at the Patterson Club in Fairfield, Connecticut, on Monday, June 27. Proceeds raised at this event will benefit both the Henry House Foundation and The First Tee of Metropolitan New York.
The Family Golf Challenge is an amateur skills competition designed to introduce more women and children to the sport of golf. With a strategic focus on providing families with a sports and leisure-time activity that brings the family together, the event also gets them involved in a charitable cause. The top 3 finishers in each challenge and category (12 total) receive Family Golf Challenge medals and the 1st place teams from each local event will advance to a regional playoff in September. The entry-fee for each competition is $15 with $5 being donated to The First Tee of Metropolitan New York.
