MALVERN, Pa. (July 29, 2011) – White Manor Country Club’s Hal Stupp proved that lightning can strike twice in the same spot … it just might take a few days for it to happen.
Stupp, who carries a sporty 3.8 handicap index on one of the Philadelphia area’s more difficult courses, now has a special liking for the 180-yard 12th hole.
On July 21, Stupp took aim at the picturesque green that is tucked into a wooded hillside and protected by a gaping bunker and slope on the left. He struck his 5-iron to perfection and watched the ball find the cup, for a hole-in-one.
On July 27, using the same club and with the hole playing to the same distance, Stupp duplicated the feat. To make matters even more astounding, his effort was aided by the same caddie each time – Pete Tashjian.
“The first hole-in-one caused a bit of excitement around the club,” reported head professional Marc Levine. “The second one was unbelievable. Nobody could believe it. I can honestly say that I never witnessed anything like it in all of my years in golf.”
Stupp, who also had a hole-in-one on White Manor’s 12th hole in 1992, admitted that his caddy played a role in his latest ace. “I wanted to hit a 6-iron but my caddy said, ‘Hit the 5-iron like you did the last time. Maybe you will get lucky again.’ I’m glad I listened to him.”
White Manor CC is a private country club, located in the Chester County suburbs to the west of Philadelphia. It was built in 1964 by the father-son team of William and David Gordon. The course hosted the LPGA McDonald’s Classic and Senior Tour’s Bell Atlantic Classic.
In 2002 a major renovation of the course took place under the direction of golf course architect Bobby Weed. Ever since reopening it has enjoyed stature among the top echelon of clubs in the Greater Philadelphia area.
