Victory marks Piercy’s first PGA Tour win; Cross ambassador Azahara Munoz places 2nd in Irish Open
It was an exciting weekend for Cross Golf USA as we watched our PGA Ambassador, Scott Piercy, rack up his first tour win at the Reno-Tahoe Open and our LPGA Ambassador Azahara Munoz pick up a great second-place finish at the Ladies Irish Open.
Piercy’s play was top-notch throughout, but the highlight came in his third round. He birdied eight in a row for a front-nine 28, then went on to eagle the 616-yard final hole, carding an 11-under 61 and setting a new course record for the Nicklaus-designed Montrêux Golf & Country Club.
Though he’s played in over five final groups in his career, finishing out the weekend atop the leader board had proved elusive. That changed on Sunday, as he held on, fending off Pat Perez (who pulled even at one point on the back nine), sinking a final putt to make par on 18 and end up 15-under for the tourney.
It was a big win, one that places Piercy in the field for the PGA Championship later this week. He’ll have to miss a planned trip to Disney and Sea World, but we can be sure his family understands. The victory also puts him in contention for the FedEx Cup playoffs (where he now sits at 80th in the standings).
The Nevada native has played the Reno-Tahoe Open before, and joked that last year, the ladies in the clubhouse awarded him unofficial “best-dressed” on the course. This year, he drew attention for sporting all black-and-white Cross gear for his stellar 3rd and 4th rounds. A winning signature look? It appears so.
Munoz hit well at Killeen Castle, at some points pulling within a stroke of Irish Open winner Suzanne Pettersen. She set herself up for a good chance at being a Captain’s pick for the Solheim Cup, which will take place on that very Nicklaus Signature Course in Co. Meath next month.
