With the languid dog days of summer upon us and much of the landscape drier than Nick Faldo’s wit, now is the perfect time for the writers at the game’s leading website-joined by golf’s fastest man-to search for the merits, if any, of slow play.
Portland, Ore. (Aug. 16, 2011) – Is there any greater scourge in golf? Worse than sandbaggers, worse than snap hooks, worse even than warm beer from the drink cart, slow play affects everyone. It’s almost impossible to avoid, turning an otherwise wonderful day outdoors into golf’s equivalent of the Bataan Death March.
For this month’s A List, the writers at The A Position methodically and ponderously scratched their heads for favorite slow-play stories. And by “favorite” they mean either the slowest rounds survived, rare moments of humor generated during a slothful slog, or a lesson (life or otherwise) learned during overly purposeful play.
These well-experienced journalists, obviously all too familiar with laborious activity, have been able to glean small bits of good from the snail-like pace of fellow golfers. Pokiness can have its advantages-but only if it doesn’t lead to murder first.
Kicking off this month’s “A List” is Christopher Smith, who is both a member of The A Position and golf’s fastest man. As the World Speed Golf record-holder he was recently featured on The Golf Channel. If he can take something positive away from slow play, there is hope for us all.
The A Position.com is a network of websites featuring the world’s best golf and travel writers. The term “The A Position” refers to the best place a golfer can land his tee shot. On the web, it refers to the site readers will want to land on for great golf and travel journalism.
