LAS VEGAS, NV – “Growing the game of golf” is the ongoing battle cry for everyone in the golf industry. New player development strategies and instructional programs are active all across the country.
No region does it better than the southwest, specifically Nevada, and several industry leaders from the area will share details of their successful efforts during a panel discussion at the PGA Expo next week at the Venetian Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The panel is set for 10:45 a.m. Tuesday on the main stage of the PGA Expo show floor.
One of those panel members is Kip Wolfe, Director of Operations for Key Golf Management, a Las Vegas-based golf course maintenance company. Wolfe will highlight Key Golf’s role in the PGA Golf Management program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Key Golf helps to fund and provide both classroom and hands-on training for the students of the UNLV PGM Program. This PGA accredited program is one of the 20 schools where young adults desiring a career in golf can gain the knowledge, and the degree, to enter the business.
“The golf industry needs to attract qualified and well-educated young people to help in all aspects of the business,” said Wolfe. “Growing companies like ours are especially in need of people who want to learn and grow with the business. The PGM program is helping to fill that need, so we decided to do what we could to help insure its future.”
The PGA Golf Management program at UNLV covers nearly every aspect of the golf industry during the 124 credit hours. Key Golf’s focus – golf course maintenance – is an important part of the curriculum.
“Technological advances, legislation and general knowledge have changed the way golf courses are maintained,” said Wolfe. “And the process will continue to change, so it is important to have educated, dedicated young people entering our segment of the industry.”
Joining Wolfe on the panel are Eric Dutt, V.P. Golf Operations Harrahs Entertainment; Joe Kelly, Director of Golf at Sun City Summerlin; Amy Bush, UNLV Head Women’s Golf Coach; Nicole Dutt-Roberts, Executive Director SNGA and Women’s Southern Nevada Golf Association (WSNGA): Janet Weber, President WSNGA; Danielle Gladd, Executive Director TFTSN; Christopher Cain, Director UNLV PGA program; PJ McGuire, President. Nevada Golf Industry Alliance; Sherry Corsello, Past President, EWGA Las Vegas Chapter. The moderator is Darrell Crall, Senior Director Golf 2.0, PGA of America.
The 27th PGA Expo begins with a Demo Night and industry party Monday, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Callaway Golf Center just south of the Las Vegas Strip. Exhibits and educational sessions take place Tuesday and Wednesday starting at 9 a.m. at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino.
