PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. (August 23, 2011) – With the 100th anniversary of the founding of Plymouth Country Club approaching on the horizon, the club’s officers and board of governors have initiated an aggressive one-year buildup to the gala celebration – scheduled for Fall of 2012. The buildup will contain a series of events, all of which are designed to highlight the fascinating history of the club, as well as build excitement among the members and within the community.
Plymouth Country Club was originally a nine-hole golf course created on a farm before renowned architect William Flynn renovated the original holes and took it to the 18-hole design that exists today.
“This is a big opportunity for our club, both to excite and energize the membership as well as educate the community about the great history of Plymouth Country Club,” explained Plymouth president Bill Hirst. “Some of the great names in golf have been involved with the development of this club and all of that history will be celebrated throughout the next year.”
The kickoff event for the year of celebration will take place with the help of the award-winning Inside Golf television show, which airs weekly on Comcast SportsNet. The Inside Golf team will be part of a day-long party on Thursday, August 25. On that day Plymouth members will host guests for a day of golf, with a “Best Dressed” competition being highlighted on air. Following the round of golf, there will be a trivia contest and a barbecue. Much of the day will be captured by the Inside Golf cameras for part of a special show that will air multiple times beginning Sunday, September 4.
A highlight of the Inside Golf show will be the story of Plymouth Country Club’s most famous neighbor – golf’s first PGA Tour player-turned-architect George Fazio – who used to live adjacent to the 12th green. He used his proximity to the course to his advantage with regard to his practice regimen.
The Inside Golf show will be followed by a similar day of golf and celebration on Friday, September 30. On that day members again will host guests in a special golf outing, followed by another trivia contest, barbecue and recording of the award-winning GolfTalk Live radio show. That show will air from 7 to 8 a.m. Saturday, October 1 on WNTP 990-AM in Philadelphia, as well as anytime after the live airing on www.golftalklive.net.
“We want the members to feel as if they are a very important part of this year-long celebration,” said Plymouth head professional Chris Hanson. “The best way to do that is to get them out here with their guests and let them tell the story of Plymouth Country Club.”
Throughout the winter the extensive history of Plymouth Country Club will be compiled for a special commemorative book that will be available sometime prior to the 2012 gala celebration. Not only will it chronicle the rich history of the club but it will provide an inside look to the club’s many colorful members.
In the Spring of 2012 there will be another round of shows from the Inside Golf television show and the GolfTalk Live radio show – each including a golf outing and party where members can bring guests.
During the Summer of 2012 Plymouth will host a Media Day and other special events designed to highlight the rich history of the club. The celebrations will come to a climax in the Fall with the playing of a Centennial Invitational tournament and the Gala 100th Anniversary Celebration.
