Claims first Champions Tour major championship, fifth title
(Londonderry, New Hampshire) – Danish brand ECCO – maker of the world’s most comfortable, technically-advanced footwear – confirms that Staff Player Fred Couples wore its hybrid Golf Street Premier shoes en route to a playoff victory at the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship, contested this past weekend at Westchester Country Club in Harrison, NY.
In winning his first Champions Tour major, the Tour legend showcased the ECCO logo on his headwear and wore Golf Street – the game’s first hybrid sport-casual style designed to be worn on and off the course – during each round. He advanced to 11th on the Charles Schwab Cup Points list, despite having only competed in five events due to injury.
“I feel great about winning my first senior major,” said Couples. “Today was a challenging day, and it was a fun day, and it’s a good feeling to win.”
With the win – his fifth since joining the senior circuit in 2010 – Couples joined Jack Nicklaus and Raymond Floyd as the only players to win both the Players Championship and a Senior Players Championship. He also earned a spot in the 2012 Players Championship.
“Fred really just epitomizes cool in every situation, and looked great all week wearing Golf Street without socks,” says Jesper Thuen, Marketing Manager, ECCO Golf. “He has the choice to wear any shoe in the world, but picks our hybrid styles because they provide him with comfort, stability and performance that can’t be equaled.”
In 2010, Couples became the first player in history to win three of his first four Champions Tour events. He went on to claim a fourth title and was honored as the Champions Tour Rookie of the Year and Byron Nelson Award winner.
The first and only true hybrid sport-casual shoe, Golf Street is available in new colors and styles for 2011, including a men’s luxury version featuring high-grade uppers made from genuine camel leather. Designed to be worn both on and off the course, its unique versatility is based on an ingeniously engineered outsole that has approximately 100 molded traction bars with more than 800 tractions angles. Providing excellent grip in all conditions, the wear-resistant and highly durable outsole is constructed from a TPU material that has been shown to last five times longer than rubber.
ECCO golf shoes are also worn in competition by scores of international Tour stars, including Graeme McDowell, Thomas Bjorn, Stuart Appleby, Thongchai Jaidee, Aaron Baddeley, Thorbjørn Olesen, Andreas Hartø, John Bickerton, Bradley Dredge, Belen Mozo, Gerina Piller and Jennifer Johnson and many others.
