Golfers nationwide help raise educational funds for military families over Labor Day weekend
NORTHBROOK, Ill., Aug. 31, 2011 – KemperSports, a distinguished golf course management company based in Northbrook, Ill., announced its involvement in the 2011 Patriot Golf Day, which takes place during Labor Day Weekend. This year, a selection of KemperSports managed golf courses will participate in Patriot Golf Day to help raise money for the Folds of Honor Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides educational scholarships and other assistance for the children and spouses of military men and women disabled or killed during service. From Sept. 2 through Sept. 5, 2011, golf courses and PGA Professionals nationwide will unite to raise scholarship dollars for military families.
“We are honored to be able to help the families of the men and women who serve our country,” said KemperSports CEO Steve Skinner. “Patriot Golf Day is a great way for all of us to give back.”
Established in 2007 by Major Dan Rooney (founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation, a former F-16 Pilot in the Oklahoma Air National Guard, PGA Professional and USGA member), Patriot Golf Day is the leading fundraiser for the Folds of Honor Foundation and provides a simple way for golfers across the nation to help honor the sacrifice of military families. Throughout Labor Day Weekend, golfers are encouraged to donate at least an additional dollar to their greens fees to fund Folds of Honor scholarships. Many courses have established additional activities, such as tournaments, raffles and proximity contests, to help increase their community’s donation to this charitable cause.
Many KemperSports managed golf courses, such as Newport Dunes Golf Club in Port Arkansas, Texas, The Course at Aberdeen in Valparaiso, Ind., Old Corkscrew Golf Club in Estero, Fla. and Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash., have created special events over Labor Day Weekend to raise additional funds for the Folds of Honor Foundation.
Newport Dunes Golf Club in Port Arkansas, Texas is donating five dollars of every green fee over Labor Day Weekend to the Folds of Honor Foundation. The course is also hosting its second annual golf tournament on Sunday, Sept. 4, which will provide $10 of each entry fee to Folds of Honor scholarships. Last year, Newport Dunes Golf Club was among the top donors in the nation to the Folds of Honor Foundation, raising more than $1,700.
The inaugural Patriot Golf Day in 2007 raised more than $1.1 million in donations from over 3,200 golf facilities. Throughout the last four years, PGA Professionals and golfers nationwide have helped raise over $8.9 million for the Folds of Honor Foundation, which has resulted in scholarships for over 2,100 military dependents. By participating in Patriot Golf Day, golfers nationwide can join Major Rooney’s mission to empower the lives of deserving military families with educational opportunities. The Patriot Golf Day campaign is also supported by both The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association.
