COLUMBUS, GA, September 1, 2011 — Roy Nix, Executive Director of the Association of Golf Clubfitting Professionals (AGCP), the world leader in the advancement of custom clubfitting and clubmaking is proud to offer the congratulations Patrick Cantlay as the 2011 Fred Haskins award winner. “Having met Mr. Haskins while working at the Columbus Country Club after Mr. Haskins had retired as the head professional and was the greens superintendent, I understand what an honor it must be for Patrick to receive this award” Nix said.
U.S. Amateur runner-up Patrick Cantlay’s amazing year continues with the announcement that the UCLA sophomore is the winner of the coveted Fred Haskins Award – an honor that since 1971 has gone to the nation’s outstanding collegiate golfer.
Cantlay, the No. 1 amateur golfer in the world, will receive the 2011 award in Los Angeles in November, according to Haskins Commission Chairman Madden Hatcher Jr.
“Patrick Cantlay had an outstanding college golf season. His record vaulted him to the top of the list for the 2011 Fred Haskins Award. He followed that with a terrific summer of amateur golf, was selected to represent the United States on its Walker Cup team and was runner-up in the U.S. Amateur. We are indeed proud of Patrick’s accomplishments and for his selection as the winner of the Haskins Award for 2011,” Hatcher said.
Since its inception, winners of the Haskins Award have won 28 majors and 250 PGA and Champions Tour events. They have also participated in 42 Ryder Cup championships.
Cantlay was aware of that legacy.
“It’s obviously a great honor. I know (the award) has been around for a long time and there are some great names who have won it. So to join that group is pretty special,” the UCLA star said.
The award is given in memory of Fred Haskins, a legendary teacher of the game and a contemporary of Bobby Jones that tutored generations of young Georgia golfers at the Country Club of Columbus.
The 2010 Haskins Award went to University of Georgia golfer Russell Henley – a teammate of Cantlay on the U.S. Walker Cup Team. The California native was the first UCLA product to receive an invitation to that honored team since Corey Pavin in 1982. Cantlay joins former UCLA star Kevin Chappell on the list of Haskins winners.
In addition to his outstanding performance at the U.S. Amateur, Cantlay was the low amateur at the U.S. Open. His even-par play left him 21st in the talented field. His second round 60 was the lowest round by an amateur in PGA play. He also won the SCGA Amateur title and tied for ninth in the Canadian Open.
In the Western Amateur, he defeated reigning U.S. Amateur champion Peter Uihlein 1-up in an epic second round match. The Oklahoma State star was the runner-up in Haskins voting behind Cantlay, officials said.
The Fred Haskins Commission was formed in 1970 in Columbus, Ga. The panel serves in an advisory role since voting for the award is conducted among college golfers and coaches along with writers that cover collegiate golf.
University of Texas star Ben Crenshaw won the first three Haskins, setting a high standard for future recipients. Crenshaw, Phil Micklesen and Bobby Clampett were multiple winners of the award. They are part of a list of luminaries that includes Tiger Woods, Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Curtis Strange, Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell and Charles Howell III.
