Houston, TX – TGA Premier Junior Golf of North Houston and West Houston are expanding their youth enrichment programs in Houston, Texas, offering TGA programs as part of the Houston school districts physical education curriculum.
The Houston-based TGA franchises, run by Julie Monzingo and David Bergeron, will begin working with area school districts, providing the unique TGA golf curriculum as part of the physical education classes in addition to afterschool enrichment programs.
Programs have already started in three districts, including the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District (Cy-Fair ISD), the third largest school district in Texas. Additional school districts are expected to sign on in the coming months.
“By running physical education programs, TGA has the opportunity to introduce golf to every student in elementary, middle and high schools while providing them the ability to continue their golfing education in TGA’s 5-level afterschool enrichment program,” said Joshua Jacobs, TGA’s founder and CEO.
“TGA’s enrichment curriculum is easily adaptable to PE programs in school, and will be a model we can implement in school districts throughout the country,” Jacobs said. “We provide all of the instructors, PGA and LPGA professionals, as well as certified TGA instructors, which takes the onus off the PE teachers and puts the instruction in the hands of the professionals.”
TGA has created a complete turnkey solution for these physical education programs that will immediately impact over 1,500 students in Houston. The program could reach as many as 7,500 this school year in the three districts. The school’s PE programs include special weeklong “units” where they offer other sporting opportunities like skating and bowling, in addition to golf. TGA will come in and run the golf units in one-week sessions.
Sheri Stice, an associate athletic director and coordinator for secondary physical education programs for the Houston Cy-Fair ISD, believes the TGA program offers multiple benefits to the school district and the students.
“We are so excited to be working with TGA, and having their unique golf curriculum in our Houston PE programs,” Stice said. “Restrictive budgets inhibit our ability to purchase expensive equipment and the TGA program enables us to implement the great game of golf on all campuses. But more importantly, it goes above and beyond skill development. The TGA character development initiative, and teaching across curriculum lines, further enhances the development of the whole child.”
Monzingo and Bergeron of TGA will come into the schools and set up the same TGA curriculum used in the after-school enrichment programs. As many as 100 students will go through up to five learning stations. The students will experience various facets of the game, such as hitting and full swing, hand eye coordination, putting, and chipping, as well as physical education and life skills. PE teachers and parents will also help coordinate efforts to create a system that easily transitions students from one station to the next.
“We are very honored and excited to be part of a growing-the-game grass roots initiative with the Houston area schools and their physical education classes,” said David Bergeron, owner of the TGA West Houston. “The TGA PE programs allow us to impact many more students in a short period of time. Through our character development initiative and education-based curriculum, each student has the ability to grow not only as a golfer, but even more importantly they can grow as a person and learn life skills that will forever be a great tool in life.”
