GOODYEAR, AZ – For a golf resort and retirement club like Pebble Creek Golf Resort near Phoenix, AZ, trust is an important word. The loyal members and guests trust club officials to consistently offer a golf experience appealing to the family-like atmosphere at the club. Likewise the club managers must trust the personnel they bring into to provide the kind of facility worthy of the trust of their customers.
Director of Golf Course Maintenance Paul McGinnis does not take the trust element lightly. That’s why he turns to Pro Turf International yearly to provide upgrades in various aspects of the 45 hoes of golf at Pebble Creek.
“Pro Turf International has done a project for us every summer for the past six or seven years,” said McGinnis. “During that span they have completed restoration of all the greenside bunkers on our two 18-hole courses. They have leveled several tee boxes and they did a practice tee project.
“We use them year in and year out because we trust they will do the job right.”
PTI’s work this summer not only involved restoration of some bunkers, but also the renovation of two practice greens at the club. The work was completed in time for the fall season. PTI sprayed the old green, stripped off the turf and restored the greens to the original size and shape. The greens were hydro-sprigged with Tifwarf.
“What I like about their work is that they are very thorough,” said McGinnis. “With the bunker work, they remove old sand, re-shape the bunkers if necessary, and they check the drainage to see if it needs attention. They are experienced enough to know if the drainage needs repair. I don’t have to be out there hawking them all the time. Once you give them the job to do, you can trust them to do it right.”
One other aspect of PTI’s work habits is especially pleasing to McGinnis.
“When we do the bunker work each summer, we don’t shut down the golf course,” said McGinnis. The PTI guys are very professional. They know their limitations. They are good about working around the golfers without disturbing play. The golfers not only appreciate the finished product, which is always good, but they also appreciate the way PTI goes about their work.”
Kip Wolfe, Director of Operations for Pro-Turf International, says his company places a great deal of emphasis on that aspect of their work.
“A club like Pebble Creek has lots of member play as well as outside play,” said Wolfe. “Those folks expect and deserve to play their round without interruption. We stress the importance of that, and do everything we can to get the job done properly and on time without disturbing the players.”
