Two golf facilities in the Middle Atlantic PGA were selected as recipients for the 2011 Middle Atlantic PGA Junior Golf Grant Program. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Forest Park Golf Course will receive $5,000 from the Middle Atlantic PGA Junior Golf Foundation. The MAPGA Junior Golf Committee selected these two facilities based on their demonstrated ability to grow the game and the need for funding.
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) program involves the Lower Shore YMCA. UMES offers educational and practical golf programs that will benefit the Worcester, Somerset, and Wicomico counties of Maryland, as well as Accomack County Virginia. They will continue the programs that have already been established and add sessions to their programming to allow year round instruction and education in golf and course management. They will be teaching beginners and also provide instruction for the intermediate golfers. One unique aspect of this program is it will use UMES Professional Golf Management (PGM) students to assist with the program. The UMES PGM program is the only one in the state of Maryland.
The Forest Park Golf Course program will help introduce inner-city juniors in Baltimore to the game of golf. With the help of the grant they will be able to bring year round instruction, rules, and etiquette to the juniors in hopes of bringing new juniors into the game. Participants will include physically challenged, high school students, and students from underserved communities. The golf course is surrounded by numerous inner city challenges such as low income, single parent households, and schools without after school programs. This program will help those kids in need and bring them into a game that teaches honesty and integrity.
The MAPGA Junior Golf Foundation was established to further enhance the section’s existing junior tournaments, cultivate its many inner-city youth programs, and become more active with all of the junior programs throughout the mid-Atlantic region.
