Europeans Turn To Abacus – Again

September 21, 2011

Now it’s clear how The European Solheim Cup team will look. And it’s a one hundred percent Swedish line-up. For the third time in a row the Swedish sport and fashion company Abacus will dress all the players from top to toe.

The first year Abacus was commissioned to design the clothes for The Europe’s Solheim Cup team was in Halmstad 2007. The clothes received a lot of attention, both for the stylistically pure design and the functional qualities. When the Americans chose to remove their jackets to swing, The European team kept theirs on, which says a great deal about the garments’ capacity to promote freedom of movement and flexibility. Behind Abacus’ success lies a strong focus on material, quality of fabric and smart details.

Timelessly graphic

2011’s Solheim Cup is to be played in September at Ireland’s Killeen Castle Golf Club. Abacus’ head designer, Chris Mattsson explains: “We’ve followed our graphic and timeless signature and worked a lot with stripes on polo shirts and tops. Wind vests and rain jackets have a sportier touch that underline the functionality. The Solheim Cup Collection this year is based on five stringent colour palettes, one for each day. The first training days have their colours, as do the days of the competition. I can reveal that Friday it will be green and Saturday yellow. But Sunday is secret!”

For all occasions

In The Solheim Cup collection there must be garments for all weathers and occasions. From the worst rain weather to the warmest sunshine. And it’s not just the players that wear Abacus clothes. Even caddies, members of the board, players’ guests and the team’s functionaries are ambassadors for the Swedish brand.” We have naturally learned a lot during our years with The Solheim Cup.” Says Sven-Olof Karlsson, Abacus’ MD. He continues, “Above all, how important clothing is for the players. Not only must the clothing cope with all kinds of weather and temperatures, it must also be comfortable and fit perfectly. And of course the players must look good in the garments. When they get up on the first tee they must feel that they can conquer the world.” Europe’s team captain, Alison Nicholas, agrees: “The quality, technical advancements and design give us the self-confidence we need to perform at the highest level in all weathers. And we do that in Abacus clothing.”
