ORLANDO, Fla. (Oct. 27, 2011) – Golfweek will release its annual Golfweek’s Best New Courses list as part of its upcoming Oct. 28 issue. Recognizing those courses that opened for play in 2010-2011, this year’s Golfweek’s Best New Courses list focuses on quality over quantity, highlighting only the top 25 new layouts – rather than the usual 40 courses – to better reflect the current pace of golf course development in the United States.
“What’s remarkable in an era of slow industry growth is how many new markets are open to golf course development,” said Bradley S. Klein, national director of the Golfweek’s Best Courses ratings program. “Perhaps the most interesting fact we’ve highlighted in our list is that a heartland state like Nebraska has three newcomers: Prairie Club’s Dunes Course (No. 4) and Pines Course (No. 11), as well as Awarii Dunes (No. 20).”
Joining the Cornhusker State’s noteworthy layouts are acclaimed courses from 16 additional states, including Oregon’s Old Macdonald Course at No. 1, Oklahoma’s The Patriot at No. 2 and North Carolina’s Dormie Club at No. 3. The 2011 rankings also feature two newly redesigned tracks – Carmel Country Club’s South Course (No. 10) and Dallas Country Club (No. 13) – whose transformations were so significant that they qualified for the list.
To produce the Golfweek’s Best New Courses list, an expert team of more than 675 evaluators rated each layout on the basis of 10 criteria, including routing, conditioning, variety and memorability of holes. The result is an average of scores, which then dictates a course’s overall ranking.
