Northern California golfer wins largest U. S. women’s amateur golf competition
Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., October 28, 2011 – Rachel Moreaux, of San Rafael, Calif., a member of the Sonoma-Marin-Napa chapter of the EWGA (Executive Women’s Golf Association), has won the 16th Annual 2011 EWGA Championship, the largest amateur women’s golf competition in the United States. The first day leader, she shot 152 (75-77) in the two-day competition winning by 4 strokes.
The Birmingham AL scramble team won its division by 2 strokes at 14 under par. The team includes Pia Todora, Terri Henderson, Dianne Young and Sylvia Sumners.
This year’s championship finals were held at the J.W. Marriott Desert Springs Resort, Palm course and the Firecliff course at Desert Willow Golf Club in Palm Desert, California.
The field of 217 competitors competed in five flights of individual stroke play and a scramble team division representing 85 EWGA chapters from 37 states and Canada. (See winners below). All competitors’ scores are available online at www.ewgachampionship.com
Moreaux, a technology consultant for 360 Tech Solutions in San Rafael, California started playing golf in 2000 and has been a EWGA member since 2004. She took up golf with her husband and son, after injuries prevented her from continuing to play softball.
“EWGA is such a great organization. I’ve made friends throughout the country and as I travel there is always a chance to play,” says Moreaux, the 49 year old mother of two grown sons. She competed in two previous EWGA Championship Finals and qualified for a third but was unable to attend due to hip surgery.
“The EWGA Championship is fair and equitable for all levels,” says Moreaux. “I encourage everyone who likes to challenge themselves to go and compete. It is an excellent chance to learn and grow. Give it your best and you will be that much better next time.”
Now in its 16th year, this annual competition is recognized as the world’s largest amateur women’s golf competition. Over 2460 participants started the competition at 120 local chapter championships and 15 semi-finals leading to the 36-hole finals.
The 2012 EWGA Championship Finals will be held at the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on October 5 and 6, 2012.
Since starting in 1991 as the Executive Women’s Golf Association, the EWGA has welcomed over 100,000 women connecting women to learn, play, and enjoy golf for business and for fun.
