GolfChannel.com content now powering NBCSports.com and NBC Sports mobile/tablet golf news & editorial sections; Golf Channel’s coverage of The Presidents Cup begins tonight, live in primetime
ORLANDO, Fla., (Nov. 16, 2011) – GolfChannel.com, the leading destination for golf content on the Internet, now will serve as the complete golf news and editorial site for NBCSports.com, as well as MSNBC.com. Effective today – and in time for Golf Channel and NBC’s robust coverage of The Presidents Cup that begins tonight, live in primetime on Golf Channel – the recently redesigned GolfChannel.com replaces the golf section on NBCSports.com on the web, as well as across NBC Sports’ mobile and tablet platforms.
“Combining all NBC Sports digital golf content under one umbrella is the next step and a very important step as we continue to build the Golf Channel brand,” said Golf Channel President Mike McCarley.
Earlier this year, all golf coverage on NBC’s television network was re-branded as “Golf Channel on NBC.”
The NBC Sports Group will carry more than 50 total hours of coverage of The Presidents Cup beginning in primetime tonight, which includes all four days live on Golf Channel and weekend coverage both on Golf Channel and NBC. GolfChannel.com Senior Writer Rex Hoggard is reporting all week from the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia.
NBCSports.com online users are now provided with two distinct ways to access GolfChannel.com content. Those who click on the golf tab in the main navigation will automatically launch GolfChannel.com. Meanwhile, users who rollover the NBCSports.com golf tab will open a two-column dropdown menu, with the left-hand navigation featuring links to specific sections of GolfChannel.com, and the right hand navigation displaying dynamic stories from the GolfChannel.com news feed. Additionally, GolfChannel.com will provide all golf content to NBCSports.com partner site MSNBC.com.
GolfChannel.com also serves as the lead golf brand for NBCSports’ mobile and tablet initiatives by providing the golf content to the NBC Sports Talk app and NBC Sports Mobile. The mobile and tablet content will feature scores from major events, the latest golf news, and tour previews and recaps. Top Golf Channel videos are planned for a future rollout.
As part of the transition, NBCSports.com’s popular ProGolfTalk blog, part of NBCSports.com’s NBC SportsTalk blog that includes ProFootballTalk.com, has been rebranded GolfTalkCentral and now lives on GolfChannel.com.
The new GolfChannel.com site was launched in June, and redesigned from the ground up as the ultimate destination for all things golf. The site boasts a cleaner user interface with timely news posts, relevant blogs, enhanced opinion sections, exclusive online video, enhanced live scoring features, breaking news tickers and informative live social media updates, making it the daily must-read for all golf enthusiasts. The platform also plays host to an online community featuring fantasy golf, live chats, user profiles and direct integration with Facebook and Twitter.
Recently, the site benefited from Golf Channel’s investment in additional marquee tournaments for its fall schedule by attracting record visitors to GolfChannel.com. On Nov. 10 during Golf Channel’s coverage of the Emirates Australian Open – a star-studded lead-in tournament to The Presidents Cup – online traffic experienced its busiest day since the new site launched in June, exceeding the busiest days of three of the year’s Major Championships, including the U.S. Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship.
