CHICAGO, December 16, 2011 – Paul Lawrie capped a year back in the spotlight with an impressive second-place finish at the Dubai World Championship last weekend to break the Euro $1 million prize barrier for the first time in nine years.
Finishing in 18th place for the Race to Dubai, the popular Scot also finished within the European Tour’s top 20 for the first time since 2002. He recently reverted back to using Wilson Staff irons in 2010 – the brand of clubs that helped him become a British Open champion in 1999.
The former Ryder Cup star picked up more than Euro $600,000 for his performance at the Dubai World Championship final. It typified a consistent record for the season that included victory at the Open de Andalucia, his first European Tour win in nine years.
“We know Paul has been working extremely hard on his game since rejoining as a Wilson Staff Advisory Member last year,” said Doug Wright, Business Director of Wilson Golf in Europe. “It’s great to see him returning to his best form with the FG Tour irons and wedges.”
Lawrie first signed with Wilson in 1993 and went on to win the Open Championship at Carnoustie six years later with Wilson Staff irons – coming from six shots back and winning a dramatic playoff with magnificent 4-iron approach shots on the last two holes. Soon after, he enjoyed a high-scoring debut (3½ points) for Europe in the Ryder Cup at Brookline.
In January of 2010, Lawrie signed a new agreement with Wilson Golf after a successful trial period using the Wilson Staff FG Tour irons. He also recently added the brand’s FG Tour wedges to his bag.
