Humana Challenge welcomes Bill Harmon, coach of 2011 FedEx Cup winner Bill Haas, local coaching standout Joe Simonds
LA QUINTA, Calif. – Three of the Coachella Valley’s golf coaching mainstays: Bill Harmon, Joe Simonds and Davey Evans will provide the area’s junior golfers with top-level coaching at the inaugural PowerBilt Junior Golf Clinic presented by Lumpy’s. The event, set for Sunday, Jan. 22 on the PGA WEST driving range, is part of tournament week for the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation.
The free clinic, which runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., will offer junior golfers ages 6 and up the opportunity to learn a wide range of skills and techniques, from driving to bunker play to chipping and putting.
Attendees will also receive a goodie bag, prizes and, in keeping with the Humana Challenge’s dedication to health and wellness, a selection of healthy snacks.
Providing the teaching are three of the most respected golf instructors in the Coachella Valley. A son of 1948 Masters Champion Claude Harmon, Bill Harmon is one of the most respected golf instructors in the country. The director of instruction at Toscana Country Club in Palm Desert, Bill Harmon is the coach for 2010 event champion Bill Haas, who won the 2011 FedExCup playoffs. Harmon is also ranked as one of the country’s Top 50 Golf Instructors by Golf Digest.
The golf coach at La Quinta High School and the womens’ golf coach at College of the Desert, Simonds is one of the most recognizable names in Coachella Valley junior golf. He serves as the Executive Director for the Junior Golf Foundation of the Desert and is the Director of Instruction at his Paradigm Golf Academy and Haven Junior Golf Academy at Woodhaven Country Club. Simonds has been recognized as a Top 50 Junior Golf Instructor by US Kids Golf.
Rounding out the threesome is Evans, the longtime head professional at La Quinta Country Club and a 2011 inductee into the Southern California PGA Hall of Fame.
The clinic is part of a 10-year commitment to junior golf by the HB Foundation, and PowerBilt Golf. Through its foundation, PowerBilt coordinates with local junior golf associations to promote the game to the next generation of golfers. The foundation will donate up to 50 scholarships a year to academically oriented and community-active junior golfers.
“We want to encourage kids to enjoy golf,” said Ross Kvinge, the President of PowerBilt Golf. “We are thrilled to partner with the Humana Challenge and these respected and accomplished teachers of the game, who will provide a great base of instruction for these juniors to build on as they continue in the game.”
Randy Corti, the owner of Lumpy’s, said partnering with the clinic fits in with his business’ commitment to promoting the game in the Coachella Valley. His stores stock a wide variety of junior clubs and equipment.
